That Dead Modern ep is amazing. LOVE it. Just bought the latest New Year Memorial single from their bandcamp. Their album I'll See You Tonight Wherever You Are is fucking killer too.

not gonna rank or tiers cuz i just can't yet but
Smoke Machines (Summer Moon), Love Comes Around, Dream Song, So Long, Sundown, and Second City, Setting Sun are my favorites atm and the rest is not far behind them. plus, this is TWBF so their strength is as an album.

I’m surprised this is getting more love and hype than the new Empty Country, this feels good but very standard
This sounds like ‘Boxer’ era The National strained through a Mumford filter and endorsed by the Scottish tourist board, and don’t get me wrong that’s not ALL a bad thing
I see short advertisements of ruddy faces, sparkly dappled light, red stags in the morning mist and ‘Visit Scotland’ in a friendly font, dunno, a bit on the nose and twee at times, too samey as well

think you’re mostly imposing that tourist board imagery doof
and this is certainly the more immediate album than empty country ii - can’t really see the overlap beyond same release date

both big indie rock releases on the same day yeah, I was more just commenting that the level of interest two 'off the beaten path' indie bands with their champions on Sput were receiving was so lopsided, and surprisingly so imo.
also the Empty Country is absolutely 'top five of the year' outstanding to me so that was my other point. That album seriously warrants 20 pages of comments, 100 ratings within the first week and comparisons to indie rock touchstones like Arcade Fire's 'Funeral' etc
this style just seems really plain to me - listening I tried to strip the vocals at times to really think about what these instrumentals are doing and I don't think they've got much going on, just a bit twinkly with some post-rock climaxes. Seemed very 'advertisment' to me, has that wash to it
Maybe I'm just 'Scottished out' with the King Creosote, Bathers and It's Immaterial commanding my listening...

I think this is just a case if you love the vocals and lyrics then you love the album and that's absolutely fine.
I'm non fussed about either, this is definitely an honestly crafted 'good album' but not really for me.

vocals def make it worse for me, yeah, easily the weakest aspect of the band

The vocals sound like a mid 00s pop rock band like the Fray or Daughtry yeah not a good look
