Dan Tompkins > Periphery Pete

“ Rody Walker is best, agreed”
Wouldn’t say he was the best, but ever since he popped his cords and had to relearn, he’s not even in the running, sadly (the running that also doesn’t even exist).
Anyway, this band’s never really clicked for me. Technically skilled singers who write shit that does nothing for me amidst a bunch of progmetal-typical atmospheres and textures just makes it the crescendocore of metal.

Kinda always felt like Rody was just good, and happened to have a high register. He also stuck WAY out because of the scene at the time lacking few notable clean vocalists. Admittedly not the biggest PTH fan though besides Volition.

"besides Volition?" Given everything you've heard from him, you weren't drawn to Kezia?

Of course I was, in the beginning. That thing was lightning in a bottle. But man it just has no staying power with me, and I actively find myself getting way over it after the first few tracks, really not sure why. Same thing happened with Fortress and Scurrilous. Might revisit it once every couple years.

Am I wrong to think this album would have gotten like a 3-3.5 here if it was released five or six years ago? I feel like people are missing peak djent or something. Maybe I just don't get it, but I'm generally a huge fan of this genre and IMO this album is nothing special.

I think this is officially the day I got tired of Tesseract's formula, this disc aside from a couple cuts leaves me not much.
Also am I the only one really not in love at all with the production? Compared to Night Verses, it just sounds so much better. This is quite... "Grey", muddy.
Also did Daniel need this much autotune? He's pretty much a top tier vocalist, why so much need for effects and stuff?

Maybe, I am honestly surprised this has such a high ranking considering how some of their previous discs have been received. This is solid average, I might have listened to it 5/6 times and it left not much on me. Lyrics are pretty horrendous too, so they just make me want to not listen to this that much

Band peaked with Altered State agreed
It's not bad but it's just the exact same formula as the previous albums.

'Also did Daniel need this much autotune?'
What? His voice pretty deliberately is not 100% in tune all the time, 'Legion' being a prime example of this. Sure there's a lot of effects going on and that's a matter of taste, but I am not hearing this egregious autotune you're talking about.

There’s defs auto-tune, just not the T-Pain kind.

“ Like, singer is good, but the Michael Jackson highs are really weird.”
I don’t like those. There are some parts that I would remove and you would get a “better” song.
But I really like how he walks a fine line between best vocals ever and embarassing ones.
Yes, sometimes he goes over his range, but I really like when singers are not afraid to go too far. His vocals are always good (watched them once live), but they are also mostly safe. In this song he just went all in and that made his performance more emotional.
On top of that there are so many beautiful melodies. The first time I heard the song I was thinking - come on Dan, there is more?
I also love how seamless the clean-scream transitions are here - he finally matched the Nascent from the first album.

His enunciation is pretty embarrassing sometimes but his tone is mostly perfect. Definitely loads easier for me to listen to than the other djent bands
