Ultimately I think a lot of the change comes down to Aaron Dessner's outside collaborations and production work. The commercial sound is toned down a bit on Laugh Track though, and the features work better than the ones here and most of the ones on IAETF as well. For better or worse LT is definitely the most "for the longtime fans" release since SWB. I see what they were going for with Frankenstein and while I didn't terribly enjoy it, I get it.

'feel like you could fashion a 4.0 album out of some choice cuts on laugh track but only if you erase everything else following SWB'

anat - you feel like they're good songs but now overfamiliar due to weaker soundalike forebears?

yeah I mean it’s hard to know conclusively but I think had the best from laugh track been released instead of IAETF and two pages, whilst it’d have been weaker than classic ntl it would have been far sweeter a pill

I agree with you

Repetition of ideas is harming them a lot

I guess I'll somewhat benefit going into Laugh Track having skipped this and the previous one, then

IAETF is fine as its own thing, I’d say they could have scraped an even better single album out of these two albums but Laugh Track is certainly the superior one regardless.

Honestly the songs they played from this sounded really good live but album is nevertheless still painfully mediocre.

Yeah, I think it's no coincidence that the Laugh Track turned out better given that most of that material was workshopped in live shows before being re-recorded. It's interesting to think of how some of this material might have been improved given that treatment.

Like this better than Laugh Track, though that one will probably grow over time too. Miles ahead of IAETF too for me, that album was such a mess imo

T-Shirt, Poolside and Tropic are essential. I really like Alien; Grease and Ice Machines are nice as well. Other songs are mostly just boring, not bad, except for the Swift song

genuinely get this and Laugh Track mixed up sometimes when I see the bumpages, but this is emphatically the turdier of the two, it seems
