I thought the same thing at first, but it grows on you, and you realize not only are they probably the most important Post-Punk band, but also have some of the best song writing and album flow ever.

There is a Light That Never Goes Out is one of the best songs ever made. Also this isn't post-punk.

Got a bit of that post-punk touch, but this is really more Brit-style-alt/early indie.

^ Definitely, it's very hard to put The Smiths into a genre, but they mostly get thrown in with Post-Punk albums.

post-punk is pretty much a uselessly nebulous term at this point, don't think it was ever supposed to be used as a main descriptor for the music of most of the bands it's applied to

Can always count on Porch to rule every genre-related discussion in a thread.

This is amazing. It's going to grow into a 5 when I get more familiar with the individual songs but album is still so good.

Also this isn't post-punk.

I challenge you to explain (in great detail) the exact reasons as to why this isn't post-punk.

This is more alternative, than post-punk

I mean, have any of you guys listened to Wire or Joy Division?

going off what porch said i agree with most of it but i'd argue that this doesn't fit at all within even the loose definition of post punk. it's much more rooted in the british indie sound. i'd almost classify them a pop band

People use the term 'pop' pretty loosely, just saying.

the burden of proof would be on you to prove how it's post-punk

What Eno said. Much more worthwhile to explain why an album is part of a certain subgenre than why it isn't lol.

“i'd argue that this doesn't fit at all within even the loose definition of post punk. it's much more rooted in the british indie sound”

agreed

not gonna write a book explaining precisely why but there’s just way more suitable/accurate ways of describing the smiths than calling them post-punk, and if you listen to more music from that era you might realize this. at least when it’s applied to this heat, PiL, the fall, wire, joy division, killing joke etc people should have an idea of what you’re talking about. even the revivalist post-punk groups of today are identifiable as such because they seem to be taking their influences from a fairly small number of those bands

it’s just when you get people trying to imply that it was a rigid unified movement or stretch the term to include any slightly experimental punk albums that came out in 1981 that i think it gets silly. leads to a post-hardcore type situation where it just becomes a catch-all term for a huge mass of unrelated bands, which isn't very helpful
