“bands like killswitch engage, as i lay dying, all that remains etc have ended up redefining to mean, well, basically what they're known for. generic vaguely thrash vaguely melodeath slaughter of the soul type riffs, melodic accessible clean sung choruses and pantera-style breakdowns on almost every song”.
Fucking love that shit haha
Edit: I really do

yeah, it ended up finding a much bigger audience than bands like botch or coalesce ever did. clearly the formula resonates with a lot more people, hence the shift...

'this isn't HARDcore, it's METALcore,' which made sense based on the music they played, combined with the attitude and ethic of the band. Same thing used to be said for Earth Crisis, Integrity, Coalesce, Unbroken'
'Conversely, if Earth Crisis and Deadguy define 'metalcore,' count us in.'
Sometimes I hear the early stuff described as 'metallic hardcore'. I didn't realise the origins of the term metalcore were given to bands like Inntegrity and Deadguy. Maybe metallic hxc was just something Bannon once said about 'Petitioning' or something, I forget. Retrospectively dropping the term 'metalcore' because it has gone on to mean an almost unrecognisable/diluted form of music, baring only fleeting resemblance to its origins is pretty lame/unfortunate in that case though.
Really cool stuff there park, thanks.

yeah metalcore started in the early early 90s
earth crisis, integrity and starkweather were basically the first bands to do the tough guy chug heavy smash-your-skull-in type of stuff, while rorschach and later deadguy pioneered the more technical stuff that eventually lead to botch, coalesce, tdep etc

in my opinion, and yes im a weirdo that rarely agrees with people, rorschach hold up by far the best out of the five early bands i mentioned in the above comment

Which 5 specifically? A lot of bands got mentioned and my brain is too small. I don't like Rorschach as much as Inntegrity, Deadguy, Unbroken or Coalesce (guessing you didn't mean Coalesce anyway, due to the timeline). Whilst interesting in a historical sense, I found them a tough nut to crack.

i meant rorschach [:
the chug stuff doesnt do much for me anymore sadly
deadguy are cool but i just find rorschach fresher these days idk
other 90s bands to check: kiss it goodbye, unruh, acme, catharsis, training for utopia

Kiss it Goodbye are another one I didn't 'get', so clearly I suck at this. Nice recs, I do recognise all those bands but think I took a 'break' before I got to them. Will endeavour to catch up.

thats alright man not everything is for everyone
i dont think most of em are masterpieces or anything either, but ill take them any day over 00s bands in the vein of trivium

Yeah, for sure. At least I don't feel like I'm going crazy anymore re this modern interpretation of the term 'metalcore'. Is nu-metalcore a thing? We really need a concise descriptor for the original stuff, like we have with OSDM... so erm... OSMcX? Hmm.

@demon my copy of the sin and the sentence is tagged with "nu metalcore" but eh i dont really see it. a big part of their sound is thrash and power metal and that's completely forgone with that term. metal subgenres in general can be so spurrious and a waste of time even thinking about. Just call it trivcore or dragon metal and be done with it lol

@alamo yeh i dont care for any trivium albums but this one really grew on me. has got really solid songwriting, tolerable choruses, great solos, bass, noodling leads. just really fun m/
