Obscure albums can be awfully bad, though...

--rage-bating 1's are directed at trends, not albums. If a difficult album is obscure and someone hears it without digging, chances are they'll just pass it by and leave it unrated. If it's riding on a level of hype that that person doesn't chime with, they're far more likely to drop a critically justified rate as a result.--

I guess I'll take this moment to hide my face in case someone sees me.

I suppose it might also depend on the criteria on employs to judge whether something is deserving of a 1 or just a 2.0, 2.5.

I've actually never listened to this band before, is there any of their previous albums I should listen to before jumping into this?

That's probably their best one. Although I would say The Destroyers of All is another great place to start.

Just to chime in on the DM band ranking discussion: Death is the only DM band in my top 20 (not counting Opeth); Ulcerate are ranked 35, Immolation 45, and Gorguts 51. I use an album rating point system to "score" bands, and Death is at 81, while Ulcerate and Gorguts are only separated by 6 points (58 to 52). So literally any of those other DM bands could leap frog Ulcerate with another 4.5, which is how close they are in quality to me.

Opeth is my favourite all time band, probably, but they're certainly not a death-metal outfit. Certainly, it's a major consituent of their metal sound, yet they also take influence from heavy-metal, black metal and perhaps even a hint of doom. They're mostly a progressive-metal outfit, especially considering their progressive-rock, folk and blues influences.
