"Next of Kin" is an all-time great Opeth track.

Charlatan is a little goofy, but I think it's the only flawed track on the album. Next of Kin is unreal. Album is full of goosebump moments, especially in the last four tracks.

Lovelorn Crime is the most beautiful track they’ve ever released.

I was unaware you had a monopoly on Nietzsche... Besides it's more about the memes for me. Although The Gay Science is still one of the best books I've ever read.

Universal Truth is where it's at for me at current.

Yeah I really like Universal Truth too, Garroted has a nice vibe. Definitely some good stuff on here 2nd time around. It’s silly at times and a couple of these melodies sound like they’re from nursery rhymes or something, but who cares? Opeth are making vaguely interesting music again.

Yes Demon! Happy you enjoy it. This ''Opeth are making vaguely interesting music again.'' is exactly how I feel, but even stronger. I'm happy with this.

I’d like to be stronger in that conviction, but I’m guarding against it for now. It is a little goofy at times. Still, I’d rather have a good/bad rollercoaster than a plateau of boredom.

Haha best way of describing Sorceress omg. Or at least I assume you meant that one because it fits so well.
I understand that. That's why I started here, I can easily see this become a 4.0 one day. It is silly indeed, but I guess that is something I enjoy from them! Never knew that I needed this from them, but it works so far for me.

I'm not even sure if the term 'silly', especially as it applies to a progressive band like opeth, should even be considered pejorative. I mean, compared to other bands, Opeth have always been somewhat silly; who would think to combine Death-metal with acoustic guitars.

Yeah (well PC as well really). This sounds more ‘out there’, the most positive thing I can say (thus far) is they aren’t going through the motions here, it’s surprisingly ambitious, varied and experimental, especially as one complete album. Does it always work? Probably not, but I appreciate the fact they tried something different.

The singles are definitely not the highlights of the album for me, with Heart in Hand being maybe somewhere slightly above mid-tier thanks to the sweet psych section and the brief metal gallop. Speaking of which, I love how this has such a quirky nature, you really can't fault Mikael for writing whatever he wants even if it'd alienate old fans... and he already did the mortal sin of alienating metalheads years ago anyway, which is like tapping on the glass of a piranhas' aquarium.

I'm inclined to say that The Garroter is far more noteworthy.

I'm sorry, this piece of crap is some pretentious bullshit pop music that Justin Bieber should have put out. Change the band name for god's sake and let Opeth retire with some dignity. This is fucking painful to listen to.
