the band themselves are responsible for the overcompression. the mix is fine

I sort of appreciate Friedmann's overcompression on the Flaming Lips' Embryonic because it fits the whole saturated aesthetic very well. This production choices don't really work for prog since it's a genre that's heavily based on complicated arrangements and details, most of which are lost in the noise.

I listened to this once, but the production turned me off so much from wanting to check it out again. Gonna go see them live where these songs will actually sound good, but what a nail in the coffin of their color albums with that same mess that purple was.

yea, I'm only able to get past the mastering on this record and Purple because of how much the band resonates with me emotionally.

for sure, it just feels like such a waste to me. I'm a huge fan of John and his art and music, but it's weird to me how he took to social media saying (paraphrased) "I can guarantee you that purple does NOT clip" and it's like dude, okay, but doesn't anyone in the band realize how awful this sounds. And then to do the exact same thing after the criticism from purple is just like, what dude are you just trying to prove to yourself or everyone else that you were happy with Purple and make Gold and Grey sound the same (or worse) to stick it to whoever he's sticking it to, or is it just like he's interested in making it sound as harsh as possible to emulate a live sound or what. I'd love to hear the argument in why this sounds the way it does.

yeah the whole mix doesn't clip because he just pushed every individual instrument in the mix to clipping point and then mastered it with a limiter. that doesn't mean nothing clips lmao. dude's a fucking moron if he's denying there's no clipping going on - you can literally hear it fuzz out.

From a marketing point of view it kinda makes sense. The production gave people something to talk about. Maybe having such a bad sound on record will increase ticket sales. Baroness might be the only band at this point who figured out it's better to have a better sound live than on CD because they actually make money from live shows. Just a thought.

that's stupid lol

I've said it before, all will be forgiven if they actually come anywhere near me. They have like 40 international dates this year but ignore the northwest entirely.
And who is going to go see a band live when what you've heard prior is crap?

He means just speculation in itself is stupid.

John is one of the best artists around (visuals wise I mean).
I loved this at first but it has worn off me a little. The songwriting is good but yeah, the production is iffy.

"He means just speculation in itself is stupid."
Yet here we are speculating. :/
I am going to bump this because I genuinely like a few songs from here despite the god awful production.
