"not in kansas" is awful. just... fucking awful. slow monotonous drag of a song, that sounds a little too much like a children's lullaby when the female vocals come on. easily one of their worst songs imo, same with "dust", which is very annoying for a minute straight. "where is her head", "so far so fast", "hey rosey", "quiet light" and "hairpin turns" are all stunners though.

I know closing songs in a natural and engaging way is often tougher than grabbing a listener’s attention at the opening of a song...but they have definitely got in a bad habit with the ‘Moon Shaped’ strings and deconstructed warbling thing that they stretch out interminably and for no real significance. Not every toon is an epic boys
If you could only listen to the last minute of each song here in a row they would all sound near identical I swear

agreed hard with this. even in one of my favourites "so far so fast". like, why does it have to be 6 minutes? the last minute or 2 could easily be scrapped for a better ending imo. that's especially apparent with "dust swirls" - it's just an annoying hymn for over a minute and then they're like "alright let's bring out the strings for the remainder of the track and make it all emotive and stuff"

The warning signs were there on SWB where my two least favourite songs ‘Empire Line’ and ‘Destroy You’ pulled the same ‘epic finale’ trick but sounded bolted together - they hadn’t really ‘built up’ to these OTT finishes :/

i feel like trouble will find me really earns those climaxes, and they're not using gimmicky ost-esque strings to do it. (they use them in "this is the last time" but that ending is so fucking good, even if it's left-field). they don't sound as much like a traditional band anymore, if that makes sense. which is fine, if you're into it, but the last time i was super invested was trouble will find me.

I’ve now watched the film, and it definitely informs this album to an extent. I’ve seen the band explaining that the addition of femvox was mostly inspired by a desire to give the musician the film a more feminine nature, which totally makes sense for the stuff used in the film itself. But as far as the actual songwriting is concerned, it doesn’t feel super necessary to me. It’s nice in a lot of songs, but I feel like it’s played more as a gimmick than an actually integral part of the songwriting. Especially for the songs that came out of the Sleep Well Beast sessions, or older (ironically the ones featured more prominently in the film). I don’t have an issue with the addition in and of itself, and indeed I appreciate them trying to shake it up, I really do, but the fact that they went for it with every single track is just a bit much. They do vary how prominent the femvox are, and on some it works beautifully but some I’m just not really feeling it. In any case, we’ve come a long way from “Can I get a minute of not being nervous / and not thinking of my dick”.
