I thought it was pretty fun at first, but the intrumentals are superficial (like the songs were written for Monday Night Football), her vocal tone is just the worst, and *clenches cheeks* her lyrics are corny as all hell.

This wore off fast for most people for those reasons. I can’t speak on her status as a celebrity or role model, because I don’t know or care, and that genuinely has nothing to do with the sounds and words featured on this record.

"The album doesn't even explicitly mention bopo much at all but even when it does it's a botched version of it at best, because flexing not exercising and calling other people ugly obviously don't align with a healthy idea of what body positivity means to any rational person [...] Her message is just "I am confident in spite of my weight but I still insult people in the same exact fashion as people insult fat people and that's fine.""

i think it's best you do your own reading on what body positivity is, the impact it has on (?) rational people of all shapes and sizes, and where lizzo and her music fit in, because i don't have the energy or platform to convey how distasteful it is for you to spell out what the movement should or shouldn't be, or to put unrepresentative words in the mouth of one of its figureheads from your position of privilege and ignorance of the movement as an anonymous skinny white man on the internet. the whole point is that there is, very significantly, no in spite of in this equation and saying that her 'insults' come off in the exact same fashion as those directed towards fat people overlooks that her delivery jokingly highlights the double standard there; it's not a hateful putdown, it's a tongue-in-cheek reclamation. you picking and choosing which parts of the album's craft and sound are aesthetically convenient or valuable to you is a luxury, and i don't think you have the platform or sensitivity to these issues to talk them down.

in fairness - me neither! i have (ofc!) heard this album, but easily the most valuable and interesting exposure i've had to it has been second hand via discussions with female friends and their experiences of the kind of social pressures that the album deconstructs. won't pretend i'm above a good ol'fashioned opinion squabble, but the main reason i commented here in the first place is because i respect those experiences, can easily place how they're represented in this music, and was miffed at how easy it is for you to trash it as someone likely lucky enough never to have been the victim of that kind of body shaming or intersecting misogyny. you say that you've clarified your views on these themes and imply i'm incorrect on the latter point, but i think the way you've repeatedly missed the point so repeatedly about what the album and lizzo is actually about speaks volumes. if you want to engage with this any further, i think articles or discussions from women in the movement would be more productive than anything further i can add - if you don't want to do that, then fair enough but i hope you'll understand why it's nothing personal that i take your opinion as anything a shallow and largely misplaced kneejerk

tl;dr don't trash talk lizzo's lyrics, craft and platform without meaningful engagement with her role as a body positivity icon // learn about body positivity from the people it most pertains to and not from mouth breathers on an all-male music site

"if you're gonna play the "you're a white dude" race card as a white dude maybe do it to someone who's actually a white dude"

made this assumption based on glimpses at photos shared here and your general tone and vibe; that's entirely my bad and i apologise for it. everything else still stands.
