Never thought I'd see the day I rate a Townsend album under a 3. Sheesh.

Mh, yea, giving this less than 3.0 is unreasonable

Only 1 or 5 is an acceptable rating for this album.

Agreed

I'm late to the discussion but I finally gave this the time of day...
This album is so difficult to listen to. I don't understand Devin disbanding DTP because he believed his music was stuck in overblown prog territory, only to release this a year later.
Evermore and Why are kinda cute, there's some cool shit in Singularity (hence the .5), the rest is unlistenable.
I still love Devin, the show I saw in February was pretty great, but I'll be happy if he never plays anything from this ever again.

Hardly unlistenable lol. It's full of tunes

Man, it's not all bad but Genesis is genuinely one of the worst things I've heard from Devy.

Couldn't agree more. This suffers from the exact same issues as late DTP. It was especially hard to stomach when it first came out as he had hyped it like it was a return to his roots.
Singularity does kinda rule tho

Yeah man, I was following all those vlogs he was posting and reading a bunch of interviews. I had such a hard time telling myself I didn't like Genesis when it came out and the end product just feels so paradoxical to what he was building up. This could have been a DTP album.

It does feel like a loveletter to all the dtp albums. There's a lot of Deconstruction in here, Epicloud (Spirits Will Collide), some sprinkles of Ghost here and there. So yeah it could've been, but dtp albums where a lot more focused, this is more of a smorgasbord of everything he's done, with something new here and there (Why?).

Yeah this def rules, Singularity has so many beautiful moments.

Maybe a smorgasbord of everything he's done post-2011, which is the weakest portion of his career. Hear Me was billed as an SYL throwback and, whilst its cool, its completely devoid of the desperation that made SYL so cathartic

Poltergeist was a better SYL throwback. Hear Me is fun though.

This took me about five listens to really grasp. But now I really love it.

his best vocal performance to date there maybe? Def my favorite song here.

Possibly from a technical standpoint but it probs wouldn't make my top 10/20 vocal performances of his

this doesn't make it as good as any of the albums it's writing a loveletter to
