SATH and Salvation are the clear best but The Beyond isn’t far behind for me and the others are all really great too.

'COL’s whole discog is fantastic.' (2)
Yes it is. Mariner is actually near the bottom of my ranking (just above the s/t) & it's still excellent. Consistency personified.

Oh shit, Mariner is their worst to you? Well fuuuuuuuuuck, I've got a lot of shit to go through, because Mariner was amazing.

It's probably best to start with SATH then Salvation but if you're looking for something even heavier The Beyond is awesome, then there's the slightly quirkier Eternal Kingdom which I also love. Every one of their albums offers something different, the only 'non-essential' release is the debut, just because they refined that sound on The Beyond, still great if you're a fan mind.
Edit: Mariner rules, just personal preference as it's different to their other releases (more vocally focused, not quite as crushingly heavy). Some people eulogise over that one.

Hawks generally has pretty good taste, usually when he and I disagree it's him that hates something I like.

It's rare I like a band enough to agree that 4+ ing an entire discog is the right thing to do, haha. Not a dig Hawks, just so we're clear.

Underoath is one of my favorite bands and only four of their albums have a 4 or higher. One of those four is hotly contested here, and I think most already know where I'm going with that.

post metal can basically have 4 different subgenres built into it or take influence from: sludge, hardcore, progressive and black.
those are the ones ive found anyway.

@Flug: Would atmosludge (i.e: Deads by LLNN) count under that banner too?

Then I'm surprised the Discord server I'm in never caught that when LLNN was on the bill for a weekly rating system.

@flug: what about crust? Early Neurosis/Fall of Efrafa has crust influences, Breach perhaps, although this sort of stuff isn't technically post-metal, is it? I get confused. Neurosis maintained the crust in Souls though & that's considered their first post-metal release.

of course there is also post rock which is the basis of the genre. im not calling post metal atmospheric sludge tho because there are post metal bands that take very little or no influence from sludge.
