Can we agree Michael, Julia, and W&B are tops on either EP or LP? If so, I think all should be forgiven.

"I find the second verse of Cities to be as intense affecting as anything on the LP, and the ambient opening is a stroke of pure inspiration. I think it's among the very best songs the band has ever written. "
Hard agree on this tbh

I don't find 2 minutes of ambience inspiring, but the second half is good for sure. To me it's a no-brainer that Bethlehem, August 6th, and Kristy are tops from the EP.

Well, you're utterly hopeless Sowing, but you have introduced me to at least six of my favorite albums through your reviews in the last several years and you got your head on entirely straight with this LP, so I think we'll be okay.

Flee, Thou Matadors would have been so appropriate for some Aaron screams somewhere but it's still such a great song. The instrumental half is awesome and "King of Spain and Queen of Portugal" has been in my head since I woke up so it's safe to say it's catchy

how sad is 2459 miles though? Jesus Christ. This album somehow lived up to it’s impossible hype for me though. So goddamn good

Man, those backing vocals in [doormouse sighs] and that "before the day is done my prince is gonna come" legit gave me chills. Also can I just say this is the best production they've ever had. Everything is so crisp and clear. You can hear every little piece of a song. So damn good.

Yeah 2,459 miles is heartbreaking:
Living two-thousand-four-hundred fifty-nine miles from home
when again that line from Eleanor Rigby cuts me to the bone
I’ve read “the Lord God said it is not good for man to be alone”
but you can leave me anytime.
Some damage done, we left for London with the sun low in the sky
to let St. Edward fix us breakfast if not otherwise obliged
to drown in doubts the future needs us, if by chance it should arrive
you can leave me anytime.
Eight sleepless days the scales of Libra weighed the stars to my design
I looked around inside and all I saw were unsympathetic eyes
I’ll tear my shirts and shatter windows, do my best to act surprised
if you leave me anytime,
you can leave me anytime.

And re: Flee Thou Matadors - probably the catchiest chorus they've written in several albums, it's always stuck in my head. A scream might have fit near the guitar solo, but not sure it would have sounded all that natural.

I know you're all ranking 2,459 miles towards the bottom, but nearly a month into listening to this album (apologies everyone, but I'm actually not sorry) that's the song that's been growing on me the most. It builds so subtly throughout the whole song and that last verse is just so potent and devastating - and then - it seamlessly reaches its climax - which is - of course - Wendy and Betsy.

Yeah I meant no disrespect by ranking it low. That and Break On Through have the Dorothy effect: brief & quiet, but devastating.

Yeah Dormouse and Tortoises... are probably the one's that jumped out to me as being just straight up haunting.

If we're talking haunting tho
How fucking whacked out and epically dissonant is "Michael"?
