I would probably love these guys if they weren't so shamelessly derivative. Really hoping the new album finds them improving the formula and actually making it their own

derivative of what, the Menzingers' and The Wonder Years' love child? Cause that's all I hear lol. This band's a bit much for me, but mostly in the vox department. There's another band this sounds like and I can't put my finger on it, but I've heard it before.
EDIT: oh yeah shakey voice guy reminds me of Captain We're Sinking. but i'm giving this another listen atm.

@atari yeah I'm easily baited, if someone says they're better than/nothing like the menzingers, I have no choice but to come charging with my battle axe

I’ve listened to Kick at least 15 times already, need to try and pace myself but it’s so bloody catchy.
Both songs released are brilliant so the album’s probably going to be something special.

Menzingers new album didn't grab me at all. After the Party was good though. I miss Captain, we're Sinking

I can understand people glazing over Hello Exile, but saying Shmaltz is better than OTIP is just pure silliness. Shmaltz literally wouldn't exist without OTIP.

I mean.... I LOVE OTIP but you know it didn't invent the genre, right?

Yeah, The 59 Sound did

Damn, “Kick” is as good or better than anything on here

I know OTIP didn't invent the genre, but Shmaltz doesn't seem to be mimicking Gaslight Anthem/Captain We're Sinking/anyone else. There's no doubt that Menzingers are their biggest influence. The dude tries to sing and write exactly like Greg.

Dude doesnt sound anything like Greg and his lyrics are way more blunt, gonna disagree strongly

He sounds a little like Greg, maybe Greg by way of Conor Oberst

he definitely does that same nasally lamenting thing that Greg does as he sings hopelessly about how good the old times were. And chan is right, he does the quivery Oberst thing too.
regardless, I really hope they win me over with the new release. On paper I should love them. If they can avoid cringe like "My dad says that I’d probably have more fans / If I could learn to sing about some happier shit / Instead of wallowing in my shortcomings" then we could have a really great album on our hands. fingers crossed.
