Well.. you take him seriously and hear monotonous ironic bullshit.. You take him not seriously and you just hear a monotonous album full of bullshit. Which is better?

the tension in this thread is delicious. I think you might be overreading a bit into it though Brushed, this isn't metal machine music

He's an expert at the postmodern approach of never making it clear whether he's being serious or ironic, thus relieving him of the need to answer to criticism. He can just pick whichever interpretation is convenient for him at the time.
Likewise he never resolves the ambiguity of what the Father John Misty persona is or when he's in character versus being himself, again to relieve himself of the need to answer for his work. The result is a watery mess that never amounts to anything significant.

who cares if he's being serious or not. can't that just be part of the appeal? I think the ambiguity is engaging and forms a naturally critical relationship between the album and its listener

But it's hard to do that when we're also bored to tears in the process. This is literally the most boring album I've ever heard. Hard to say at the moment if it's the worst, but I can't think of anything more boring

idk it isn't really that boring to me. I agree that it slogs in the middle and Leaving LA is obviously too long but it didn't drag for me in the way it seems to for a lot of other people

This is growing on me at an uncomfortable rate. Bumped to a 3.5...will have to spin this a few more times yet.

You have to be a completely inauthentic person to relate to the lyrics on here, whether it's ironically or not
Also did anyone read the liner notes for the album? Dude totally knows he's pulling a fast one

If there's anybody he's pulling a fast one on it's all of you who are giving this 1s.

How? I'm literally never going to listen to it or any album from him ever again

People who dislike this aren't having a fast one pulled on them, and neither are people who enjoy this. FJM is just an asshole, he tries to be. It gets him publicity which in turn garners album sales. Some people can relate to his bitter sense of sarcasm, even if they don't give a shit what he's singing about. I don't need to relate to his lyrics to find his cynical wit and intentional boorishness both appealing and at times humorous.

You still had the experience of listening to it at least once and it was a negatives experience for you. You've lost. It's clear he wanted this to be divisive, to see how many people he could piss off and how many would love it. One could say he's just playing those who like it too but I think he clearly put thought and care into creating this work, and at the end of the day if one does like this it's been a positive experience.
