Ocean Machine is an interesting comp. Not a perfect one, but out of his whole discog that seems like the best place to start. Honestly I don't see it as being much like other DTP albums aside from the production. Compositionally I hear some Deconstruction - it's a little slower to move than some of the recent ones. But DTP has been so all over the place I think it's hard to say that this fits a certain mold.
Still, I;ve always appreciated Devin's ability to provide great hooks, even on some of the more contemplative records he's done. But this seems pretty light on those moments. I think I agree with those who see this as an exercise in tone and therefore maybe a little light on substance.
And also, people, Epicloud is so cool! What's wrong with you all!?

Also, of course, I have to give this way more time that I can. It took me years to get into and really understand some of his stuff, so whatever I have to say now is basically useless. But I like talking.

Your comment was an interesting read but in the end all I gleaned from it is that I now want a big bowl of bran flakes

You all are helping me like it. I was non-plussed at first, but I think I'm shifting gears in order to understand it better.
It's funny. I feel like there's a specific strain of DT fan here praising this album. For the past couple years I think I've been a different strain. But the guy offers so much, you have to phase in and out of certain things. There's so much diversity in his music I kinda think you can't appreciate it all at once.

200 years ago Devin would have been composing symphonies for the rich men in some dumbfuck King's court.

devin is a world class genius but also a spaz who can't sit down on focus on one fantastic record anymore (except as casualties of cool it would seem)

He is a genious and the best part of it is that he doesn't give 2 shits about it. I love the guy.
