"I feel like for the genre people want fast paced, manic vocals, upbeat energy and ferocity"

yeah i mean why read and acknowledge any of the criticisms posted since it came out when you can generalize everyone into stereotypical metal neanderthal

Yeah but this isn't atmospheric like at all. I enjoy atmosphere in metal a great deal, but I didn't even think that was the intent here tbh.

there are some atmospheric influences, such as on the opener, but generally speaking I see this as a well executed minimalistic metal album with strong songwriting and enough variance to make it interesting on multiple listens without sounding unguided.

they talk about this being simplified, but I'm pretty sure that this album is for people who are already fans of Gojira. I love it, but they are one of my favorites and I love the departure. Its not going to turn heads of people who always ignored them due to their hype. Either you buy in or you don't.

Like how do you even define that.

t/t could be one of their best tracks if they didn't use the same verse for the third time after the heavy section...It really kills the momentum

@breaking: I meant that the riffs are generally more scaled down and void of superfluous detailing. Less is more so to speak. It was more of a comment on their songwriting approach than trying to conjure some sort of definition for 'minimalistic metal' if that makes more sense.

I get what you mean but I don't know, to me this just sounds like really underwhelming sludge. Maybe it'll click in the future.

Obviously it's not full-blown sludge like Neurosis or The Ocean or whatever but in describing this shift in style there's clearly sludge influences present here that make the change.

I think you could argue there are some sludge influences on here too, especially in the first track. Breaking said it though, definitely not full-blown sludge.

breakingthefragile convinced me that the album is not that good, I (give me a verb here) my rating of 0.5 (I had it at 4)

Also, I've realised it's an eight tracks 38 minutes long album. That's not a lot.

This is my first gojira record. Sounds like a djenty mastodon. I really like it so far
