he isnt a bad drummer, never even said he was. toomanyfriends just trippin' that someone had the gall to accuse the one band he's heard of playing it safe.

he's just by no means exceptional.

If I was in a band and I needed a drummer I would rather have somebody as solid as Abe then a crappy Mike Portnoy or Luke Holland imitator.

okay let me rephrase:

band as a whole is incapable of stepping outside of their comfort zone

who's fault that is? i know not but my money is on chino being a big part of it seeing as he is one of the least adaptable vocalists in the history of popular alternative music.

abe is probably one of the best musicians in the band.

I've seen you say this before and I still don't understand what you mean by this. Rapping, singing, screaming like I just don't get what else he can do for him to be considered 'adaptable'.

i'd feel comfortable calling abe the best musician in the band. sure chino's not really adaptable but it's like do you want him singing like bossa nova shit??

they've changed from album to album though. not as much recently but like when white pony came out songs like teenager were a total shot out of left field

"surprised how ppl give a shit about the rhythm section of this band"

the rhythm section of this band is literally the only thing stopping the band from falling apart into a puddle of blood-stool

"I've seen you say this before and I still don't understand what you mean by this. Rapping, singing, screaming like I just don't get it."

how is switching between rapping and singing and screaming 'adapting' if thats how he's been doing every song of his entire career? ok he can do multiple styles but he cant for the sweet holy fuck of himself do them in any way other than the 'deftones' way. listen to literally anything chino has ever sang on in his life outside of deftones and tell me he doesnt make it sound like a deftones song. he is utterly incapable of thinking outside of his comfy little nu-metal deftones specific box and it makes the band largely unable to develop in any direction

hence why all their shit sounds the same.

"sure chino's not really adaptable but it's like do you want him singing like bossa nova shit?? "

singing bossa nova over nu-metal isnt adaptive, its counter-intuitive. but if he was a good vocalist he would be able to enter other projects with a fresh aesthetic. take aaron turner for example, an artist that is definitely 'ISIS'

look at all his sound projects. none of them sound like isis. because he is adaptable.

but the BIG thing there is that not only is he adaptive, but his band is too, so even albums within ISIS's discog sound very different. Chino is an unadaptable vocalist stuck with unadaptable musicians for the most part and therefore they just make the same songs over and over again and creative growth is tossed out the window

which is probably a big factor in why deftones fanboys are so loyal...

fanboys dont like change and fortunately deftones seemingly CANT change

I thought the appeal was textured guitar lines with the vocalist being all emotional and stuff

But wouldn't that be just because of the tone of his voice? Like I can't imagine Thom Yorke on a side project sounding any different from what he would sound like on a Radiohead album.

"they've changed from album to album though. not as much recently but like when white pony came out songs like teenager were a total shot out of left field"

im talking since finding their sound. which was with white pony. around the fur was almost there undoubtedly but im not including the progression between adrenaline and white pony as a piece of that. but from white pony on they had solidified a unique style that has at this point kind of collapsed under its own lack of inertia.
