"i mean there isn't even a ton of context behind it in the first place, he doesn't have a super deep story going on. there's a seedy atmosphere and a pretty vague story going on but even then it all carries over to the comp"
not at all man, the overall feel and atmosphere and story those mixtapes provide is perhaps unlike anything else ive ever heard in hiphop, disagreed 10000000%
then again, im canadian too, was in university when they were coming out, and was living a lifestyle not all that dissimilar than the tone and feel the weeknd was portraying with those tapes, so perhaps i had a easier grasp of the context

"He's someone that is so far removed from society through the abuse of sex and drugs that he no longer sounds human."
thats the fucking point dude
hob - hes young, starting to get involved with women, drugs, its a bit eerie but exciting, hes trying to figure it out, he deals with his first love come and gone
thursday - at the peak of it all, it all seems fun, but yet the dark side of it all is still there as he tries to block it out
eos - the come down of it all and facing himself and reality, he says he isnt scared, but his soul is exposed nonetheless and tells a different story
its all very obvious really, and the whole thing purposefully comes full circle, just like a drug experience, just like a party, just like a failed relationship

i dont see whats the problem with alien giving the "trilogy" (aka a placeholder for all three mixtapes together) a higher rating than the individual mixtapes then.

"i thought BBTM was great, but "What You Need" is still my favorite abel track"
One of my faves too, but it has that kind of sound that it's nearly impossible to write another great song that sounds like that.
Also, the version without the sample on it (the one in the compilation) seriously not as great

"Facts" is gonna age terribly. That Steve Harvey line is already a dated reference.
|

His delivery on Famous reminds me way too much of Cal Chuchesta, can't even take him seriously on that track anymore.

I will admit that this has grown off of me everrrr so slightly; it used to be a weak 4.5 for me but now it's a strong 4

feedback is fantastic
the abrupt key changes on famous annoy me but I get what he's trying to do but he did it more successfully on other songs (no more parties in la)
but anyway it frustrates me that he intentionally went with the worst kind of tres hombres style album art just to prove a point
he could have taken a picture of a pile of shit and it would literally be a better album art but instead he just used the worst album art of all ever
