If I had to score this now it would probably be a 3.5 from what I remember - need to listen again though... very difficult finding the time to listen whilst being completely uninterrupted & shut off from the rest of the world. I get the feeling it's the only way of digesting/evaluating it properly.
Very well written review by the way, must've been difficult constructing a (somewhat) critical review of such a well respected album.

I understand what you're saying at points, I think it's just two different ways of looking at the same album. The ambient sections are so layered and emotional I really couldn't care less about how long they lasted (ok if it's 20+ minutes I'd probably get annoyed). And your descriptions of the build ups as if they are a detriment are precisely what I love about the album. In fact in that third paragraph I could've sworn you were singing the album's praises until you transitioned into the fourth paragraph. Respect your opinion and the album is definitely not unable to be criticized, just interesting the way you look at it.
