this was as original as orignal could be when it was released, there was none other like it, at least on a mainstream level

Those early Soundgarden albums are pretty damn heavy

Not disagreeing with either statement there at all, just as far as the first one goes this was a new step for sure and then Vitalogy was a step further - on balance, this is definitely remembered as the hard rocker and Vita as the weird one

and yeah they were at least as far as riffs go but I've never been one to judge solely based off that - songs like Sickman are far more atmospherically heavy than basically anything SG ever wrote

Selected 'Grunge' ratings: 4.5/5 Nevermind/in Utero

4/5 Dirt/Jar of Flies, Purple, Superunknown, Dust

3.5/5 Badmotorfinger, Ten

3/5 Core, Bleach, Sixteen Stone

2.5/5 Vs, Alice in Chains

So I don't really have any particular loyalty beyond rating the two Nirvana albums highest. They've all produced better and worse stuff

You obviously haven't heard songs like Gun and Power Trip.

Rowan.....i will agree that a song like Sickman *tried to be heavier.....but atmospherically speaking (a great way of phrasing it by the way), I feel that early Soundgarden takes it....as you are aware, faster and/or harder doesn't equate to heavier

Grunge doesn't get heavier than Jesus Christ Pose. Let's be real.

(Which has atmosphere and speed)

im no guitarist, but it sure sounds like those early Soundgarden albums are tuned down which automatically creates the foundation for a heavier 'atmosphere'

Slaves and Bulldozers might be even heavier.

This is honestly something that happened to me a few years back. I had blood poisoning/meningitis which led to being cordoned off in the hospital and having all manner of tests and a nurse giving it the old finger up me chute. To make it even more humiliating I knew her and there were a bunch of med students watching. lol you have to laugh!

i would've demanded that the med students leave, unless you preferred the audience of course!
