your sentence was literally: this is deffs 'x'. its also 'x', but 'x' isn't really a definable genre/sound. 'x' is.

At least 95% of IDM I've heard is ambient techno, so I'll just take you at your word there.

well 100% of idm is ambient techno because idm is literally just another term for ambient techno that was coined later on and gained popularity

I didn't know they were interchangeable. You're the first person I've heard say that, but it makes sense so I believe you.

"IDM is more of a blanket term tho."

no its just an alternate term for intelligent techno which is literally just an alternate term for ambient techno, its just buzzwords, the root is ambient techno, they are all the same thing.

I just don't like the term IDM, especially since, as Potsy says, it's exactly the same as ambient techno

Shit, I always thought IDM stood for Industrial Dance Music. Makes way more sense now.

I would not call this ambient techno

neither would anyone else bud. drukqs is an amalgamation of the experimentation, minimalism and percussion driven approaches of ambient techno aka idm and other styles like drum and bass and acid techno

I've always considered those the of the major categories under the IDM umbrella alongside ambient techno

idm and ambient techno are the same thing so that doesnt make sense.

also drum and bass definitely is not of the 'idm umbrella' and neither is 'acid techno' acid techno is derived directly from acid house, but made with specific sounds and d&b is rooted in dub

ok well at this point we've reached territory of which I have little knowledge, so I'll take your word for it. I just argue that IDM and ambient techno don't mean the exact same thing

they do tho read my earlier posts, and to elaborate further;

in the 80's ambient house spurred artists like aphex to explore a similar progression by mixing techno with ambient and experimental music, it was called ambient techno. in the 90's it became a distinct style and notable labels picked up on it, like Warp records, who released a series of albums focusing on ambient techno, but to create hype they made up a bunch of buzzwords like post-rave electronic and some other bullshit like that which basically just means that the music can be enjoyed outside of dance atmospheres. the first album in the series was called Artificial Intelligence and it included tunes from pretty much all the original ambient techno dudes like aphex and autechre and after its success they dubbed it "intelligent techno" (artificial intelligence > ambient techno > intelligent techno) which was also interchangeably titled "intelligent Ambient". then a bunch of other bullshit genre terms came along all basically just used to describe the same post-club bullshit like "art techno". and then one day some some asshole wrote a review for some 'intelligent techno' bullshit and replaced techno with 'dance music' in his review because why the fuck not and then it caught on and then people like aphex thought it was fucking stupid and derogatory towards other electronic genres and the rest is history

tl;dr IDM = the end result of a series of buzzwords and pretentious bullshit hyping up ambient techno

you see a little bit of research will often clear things up when just assuming things are a certain way fails u

of course if u wanted to u could say "idm refers to ambient techno post-early-90's" but its still just ambient techno, all genres evolve over time. no genre sounds the same as it did during its origins, but most of them also didnt change their names for no particularly good reason other than to sound cool
