Also, you didn't like it? I reckon it really shines in a lot of places, like the track 'Faithless,' but was a bit awkward and unenjoyable on the track 'Cinerum'.
Idk, I think the guy's talents lie elsewhere. his style doesn't really seem to fit with his intentions, a lot of the time the "ambient" stuff is really kind of "in your face", especially when he uses a lot of trance like lead-ins

Am I not getting a Dev review of this? ;)

Ahh okay. Some of the NS stuff is dubstep though, wouldn't you agree? Especially a lot of Kingdom's stuff. And I've always seen specifically with Girl Unit's "Wut" that people try to avoid that term. Discogs describes it as "Instrumental, Crunk, Hip Hop" (instrumental as the first descriptor, really?) when to me it's just dubstep. The NS site even says "“Wut” is in half-time, drawing heavily on Girl Unit‘s Southern rap influences.". It's like they're just trying not to call it dubstep.

"I just personally don't like the term "bass music", but yeah it incorporates all aspects of the "sound" (I haven't heard it yet though, but yeah dubstep and such)"
I think you might be surprised when you spin this. no womps a la Songs for Sleepy. there's only one cut-and-dry dubstep track. (well I say that, correct me if I'm wrong/when you listen)

Haven't heard it yet man Plus, I don't wanna deny Aids his feature, but hopefully I will
Please tell me that wasn't me you thanked in that album pic (not trying to assume that I would be thanked, but I did see Dev on there)

It's just mainly because there's so many other things to it as well, like Kingdom obviously draws from both hip hop and house music as well. I think the "instrumental" tag is meant to refer to instrumental hip hop (as in, beats)... well that's what I assume

"oh, well i thought it was in the same vein as post-rock, post-metal, etc but dubstep is already a subgenre itself so that would just be tedious. thanks"
he's not necessarily saying that it's a ridiculous concept (post-dubstep), it just doesn't currently exist (and for the sake of my grandchildren's already cluttered list of genre tags, I hope it never does)

Yeah I mean they obviously draw from other stuff (and actually kingdom is defined as dubstep more often than Girl Unit for sure, I was more referring to the Skream quote when referencing him), but should "Instrumental, Crunk, Hip-hop" really describe "Wut" before just plain old dubstep? And if "Instrumental" describes "hip-hop", why the hip-hop tag at all?
If I were to describe "Wut", I'd probably say Dubstep, Garage, and then maybe go into something like "hip-hop".

As a genre it's a ridiculous concept ;)
As an idea, like documenting and describing dubstep's influence over other genres then, the idea of post dubstep makes perfect sense. Like for instance, this track wouldn't exist without dubstep

so youre saying i could be inventing a genre here? lol my song is specifically just atmospheric almost proggressive dubstep (*flame sheild*) with some ambient thrown in there but its MUCH heavier than this.

This was discogs right? No site is infallible to a certainty, especially when they're at the mercy of user edits

Ah right. I didn't want to be the guy who was like "people should thank me for things", but I just saw Dev and went "wut?"

That whole unclassified release was insanely cool, especially for being something from adult swim.

Yeah that was from discogs, and sure they're not infallible but to call Wut instrumental, crunk, and hip-hop all before dubstep just seems like a blatant desire to NOT be dubstep, since to me that's a pretty obvious descriptor. But I mean that's coupled with Night Slug's own description of that release, which is:
"“Wut” is in half-time, drawing heavily on Girl Unit‘s Southern rap influences. Its booming low-slung kicks, monumental claps, 808 triplets, its rapturous organs and eponymous vocal cause dancefloor rapture. These are rap instrumentals reimagined as center-piece club trax that touch on a new intensity."
Even with Kingdom, they'll say that:
That Mystic is "Mixing up garage, crunk, US club, house and R&B"
Dreama is: "A cinematic half-time environment of impecable snap percussion and winding eski synths"
It's kind of arbitrary at this point, I just think that a lot of people (or labels) definitely DO try to describe a song/sound/release as whatever they can to avoid calling it dubstep, even if that's what it should be called.
|
| |
Oh yeah definitely, and there's probably a whole lot of people wanting to avoid that word in the wake of Skrillex and co, but at the end of the day it is what it is

Okay cool I just wanted to see if we're on the same page there. I mean I don't blame them for not calling Wut or dreama or that mystic dubstep. It would probably turn some people off.
