I know man should've ended up on Futures instead of some of the weaker tracks imo. You'll probably dig Clarity; it, BA or Futures are the typical fan choices for their best album although I disagree.

| |
yeah fuck consensus just gotta follow yr own ears!
did you dig curtains? anne and time tonight are so good man
|

Album Rating: 4.4
Yeah man I'd already heard Curtains a couple times but it's legit. Anne is the bomb, and Leap Your Bar is really nice too. On the Empyrean now, loved it the first time I heard it and didn't like it that much the second time so idk how I feel about it now. Before the Beginning is still legit though.

empyrean is kinda proggy yeah smooth grooves
gotta have the right setting (read: drunk/high) and it can be mindblowing
josh rules on song to the siren (he did everything but sing i think)
flea bass rules on unreachable
central is prob my fav jf song (that or 'with no one')

Oh man imagine Josh singing Song to the Siren, would be fucking amazing.
Flea bass always rules, man is a god on that instrument.
I remember Central being pretty good but a few of the others blurred together for me, idk why cos I loved it on first listen.
Some of the bonus tracks are really good though, Ah Yom and Here, Air especially.
|
| |
yeah central is insane i went through a period of about three months when i used to just go out driving in the country at 2am with empyrean blasting overwhelmingly loud and it was like being on another planet haha
yeah here, air is so gorgeous
josh is a really fuckin great drummer

Damn Josh is just fuckin awesome at every instrument lol. Here, Air and Ah Yom shoulda made it onto the album imo, although I can see why he kept Today off, not really a fan of that one. Same situation with Letur-Lefr and PBX actually, I reckon he shoulda just chucked all the tracks off both (plus Walls and Doors) onto one album instead of splitting them.
|
| |
with the empyrean i think those were left off because they didn't fit with the theme/story of the album (it is a concept album which isn't all that obvious cos it isn't rammed down your throat)
iirc l-l and pbx were recorded like a year apart or something so idk... it kinda boggles my mind how much stuff he would have recorded that will never see the light of day... like omar rodriguez lopez said last year that john had 300-400 songs recorded in the last few years just sitting in his archives hahaha
on that note have you heard the album 'omar rodriguez lopez & john frusciante'? it's pretty cool just like 25 mins of instrumental jams
|
| |
btw digging clarity a lot so far

Oh I didn't know it was a concept album and I was reading the lyrics, hah. That's cool, what's the concept about?
I didn't know about the time difference between Letur and PBX but I still reckon that In Your Eyes and In My Light are some of his best, they shoulda been on an album I reckon. And yeah, that is mindfucking about his unreleased shit lol, maybe we'll hear it one day.
Nah I haven't heard that album cos I'm not big on instrumentals and I'm not the biggest Omar fan but I might check it sometime.

Also that's cool man lemme know what you think when you finish. Last track is a monster.
|
| |
what's the concept about?
no fucking idea! and i've heard it over 100 times! i don't really think about that shit i just immerse myself in the music and float away
yeah if you're not so into instrumental then prob don't bother with the ORL&JF record
will let you know when i get there man, up to crush right now

Damn I'm intrigued now haha, I love concepts in music I should try and find out about the Empyrean's somewhere. Idk man Frusciante definitely does instrumentals better than most people, his keep me interested most of the time even when they're 9min + (Before the Beginning and Wayne) so I might check it out.
IMO Crush (along with Ten) is the weakest track on the record but they're still alright.
|
| |
i think he explained it to a certain extent, there were a lot of blog posts on his website about it when it came out (jan 09) but they're all gone now... prob kickin around somewhere on the web though
yea crush was ok bit bland but not bad!
diggin old JEW a lot
|
| |
order/disorder is a tune I might have to get this

Album Rating: 4.4
In general I'd say old JEW from Static onwards is a tiny bit better than new JEW cos new JEW produced Chase This Light and Damage, which are still good but their weaker ones imo. But then again it also produced Futures and Invented so idk, they're just consistently amazing as fuck.
