Ah ok. Maybe his voice isn't suited for the record's "catchiness" but out of three vocalists I still think he has the most catchiness potential.

maybe, but I don't think it's expolited well here. just listen to oblivion. his voice is much more polished there. maybe it's the production but the roughness on this album just ruins it for me and the writing isn't good enough to counter that.

The writing here is simpler but yah I get your point. Still think this is a solid listen though.

each to their own
I've given this 2 listens and I've gotten bored both times so I probably will just let it be

For the first time, i find a Mastodon album rather flat (as in 3/5) with the first listen.
All songs sound kinda samey :-/

dude, what? i think theyre very diverse. Black Tongue, Curl of the Burl, Blasteroid, Stargasm, The Hunter, Creature Lives, Bedazzled Fingernails, and The Sparrow all sound completely different from each other.

dunno, i got that impression from the first listen.
Might change my opinion with upcoming listening sessions if the record's merit is bigger, but for now this is my two cents.
Let it be noted for the record, i thoroughly worship all previous Mastodon full-lengths.

Don't worry Voivod, I had that reaction too the first time I heard it. This album is a massive grower...

As a huge Mastodon fan I was pretty devastated when I first listened to The Hunter. I mean I was so stoked when I first heard Black Tongue, I just thought they could whatever they hell they want and I'd still love it.
Well, I was wrong. After a few listen-throughs I enjoyed it a lot more than in the beginning, but it still isn't a particularly great album for me, as all of Mastodon's albums so far have been.
There a re a few highlights in there (Stargasm is awesome for example), but songs like Creature Lives are just horrible.
So my list would be as follows:
Leviathan (greatest album of all times imo) > Remission > Blood Mountain > Crack The Skye > The Huner.
One last thing: Expectation's a bitch.

Fuck my life. So many of my favorite bands start making albums that I don't like.
Started with The Ocean's Anthropocentric, then Opeth's Heritage and now even Mastodon. Now if Gojira or Between the Buried and Me makes a bad album I'm gonna kill myself.

Wow, best review I have read on this site (including staff reviews). From the loaded-yet-comprehendible diction to the metaphors and allusions chock full of rich imagery, you have truly outdone yourself with this one, sir.

Yeah 2011 seems to be the year of regression for many bands I listen to as well.. It's kinda weird.
