Interesting to think that this came out when my dad was 15. He’s really into Bruce and for whatever reason I always figured that must have been a purely adult thing but I guess he must have been jamming it as a teen. Jersey represent dads unite

Same. My dad was about sixteen (born in '59) and grew up in Northeast PA, right off Roosevelt Boulevard. Loved Bruce back then, all the way up 'til the day he died. Sadly I was never able to share that connection with him because I'd always associated Bruce with meat & potatoes dad rock, especially going off some of the bigger "hits" (Born in the USA, Dancing in the Dark), which are coincidentally some of his worst tracks. Wasn't until a few years ago that I dug deep into Bruce's catalog, mostly the earlier stuff (Nebraska and before), and it's all really, really good. Wish I wouldn't have been too stubborn to discover that before my dad passed away but I like to think he worked some posthumous magic on me.
I think my favorite is The River, despite being maybe the most inconsistent and sprawling, it's just so damn fun and carefree and encompasses everything I love about early Bruce.

(also funny you mention TGA; before he did pass, I showed him "The '59 Sound" thinking he'd like it because it had that same Bruce-y, Americana sound, and he loved it. I think Here's Looking at You, Kid was his favorite song. I also appreciated the Casablanca reference.)

It's weird how people hate on Born in the USA and Dancing in the Dark; those are amazing songs.

don't like either of those songs. had a big argument with my sister about "dancing in the dark" vs. "born to run" as a favorite bruce song. nearly tore us apart.

Dancing in the dark is amazing to... well dance to. And I'd rather listen to that than anything by TGA.

Born To Run is (obviously) great but I definitely prefer Thunder Road and Backstreets

also Born in the USA and Dancing in the Dark are great songs but the album as a whole is pretty overrated and Glory Days is up there with his worst songs

Don't forget tunnel of love dude. That's the last great one in his run. Lyrically, it's pretty important in his discography.

The Rising, Magic and Wrecking Ball are pretty great and the rest post-Tunnel are still decent.

Just listened to the stockholm stadion 1988 concert and all the tunnel of love songs sound so much better on that.

the only springsteen song i've ever heard that DIDN'T sound better live is "born to run". just never captures the spirit of the recording. but literally every other springsteen song is enhanced by the live performance

I love born to run live. Whenever I listen or watch them perform it, there is so much energy and you can tell they are really enjoying themselves
