EVG comes very close to having soul. You can tell that their is actual emotion somewhere beneath it. But it ruins it by signposting what it's actually about it to anybody without autism. Do you think that any good western television show or film would actually spell out what the hedgehog's dilemma is to its audience? All anime is devoid of subtext.

Sure cuz that is a Western concept. Asian people don't care about that crap. This is something that I see very often with anime elitist, they want anime to have the same depth as literature (which is not a bad thing at all) but they start using all these concepts of western academia like subtlety, subtext, good exposition and all that crap. Asian people don't care about that when they write their stories, that's a concept of the Western world and more specifically the Anglo-saxon world. Nobody here in Spain cares about writing subtle books either, I doubt Cervantes was thinking "how should I make this subtle enough to not spell my point to the reader" when he wrote Don Quixote and that's a masterpiece of literature.
