Well to each his own Inveigh, I personally identified with the lyrics constantly, I look at the album as a look into Cudi's psyche over the past year and how fame has changed him and brought on dark times fueled by drug abuse and excess. His lyrical skills aren't nearly as poor as you're making them out to be, you bring up Kanye this is probably the same level of lyricism as West's new album. Just as many great songs IMO as well.

I can see it as decent background music while driving around with friends
that's what it is though. this aint thinkin music brotha.

that's cool and all, but it's been done to death and I just don't think he adds anything new to the drug-tormented rock star theme.

depends on what you mean. Kanye's rhyming is still more complex than Cudi's, but it's not just that -- Kanye's consistently clever throughout that whole album and you pick up things in his verses on subsequent listens that maybe you didn't notice the first time around. I've listened to this twice all the way through and all I hear is the same one syllable rhymes with cliched metaphors (when metaphors actually come into play, which is rare here) and no real wit or depth.
and yea I get that it's not thinking music, but Cudi annoys me so much that I can't even get mindless enjoyment out of this anymore. For mindless party music I'd rather listen to Chromeo lol (then again, i fucking love Chromeo)

Not in hip-hop though, that's pretty uncharted territory for the most part, the album doesn't glorify excess like most rap, including Kanye's new album, does and when it does so it's to put across the dark side of Cudi, "Mr. Rager", that makes him act like a typical excess-loving rap or rock star. That's what spoke to me so much about this album, maybe the lyrics aren't technically amazing but they convey and overall message, tone, and theme to each song on the album and each "Act" those songs are split up into. Very rarely is hip-hop so introspective and vulnerable.

you need more indie-rap then.

oh boy... that sounds like something said by a person who has about 10 hip hop albums in their collection. try some:
Atmosphere
Outkast
P.O.S.
Mac Lethal
Aesop Rock
Murs
Brother Ali
shit, even Tupac had a lot of introspective and vulnerable moments, but I'm not sure that's what you were going for. The emcees I listed are, though. and all of them have been making records a lot longer than Kid Cudi.

A wild inveigh pounces
also hip-hop is like 20% of his pie chart out of like 1300 ratings so idk what he be listenin to

yeah just checked his ratings, definitely has more than 10 hip hop albums lol
but no underground or indie shit really, which is probably why this seems so unique or original. but this stuff's been around for over a decade, CuDi's just got the moola to pay for that top 40 glossy production and featured artists. And he does write radio-ready hooks, I'll give him that.

pretty much that ^
but we all knowall them underground guys are like
I still say fuck a major label till it limps,
Put your deal up our table and we'll show you who's the pimp.
There is no sympathy for the careless,
Fuck the extra credit and fuck the demerits.
Class dismissed.
fuk ya Atmosphere

It goes, one little, two little, three little indie rap
Headphones, backpacks watch em' all piggyback
Switch up my styles, they all complain, but see
which kids next year sound the same as me?

Yeah I sure as shit have listened to more than 10 hip hop albums, there are shitloads I still haven't rated on here in my collection, been a big hip hop fan for many years and I adore alternative and independent rap. I"ve listened to every artist you mentioned Inveigh, quite a bit actually. None of them seem to connect with me like Cudi does, just the combination of the beats, his voice (which I love but you hate so I guess we'll agree to disagree) and the subject matter all ties together perfectly on this album IMO.
I know my underground shit too, I'm a big fan of JMT, AOTP, Apathy, 7L & Esoteric, Dilated Peoples, etc. I just love Cudi, what can I say, been a big fan of the guy since I first heard his underground shit years ago

ok mindless party music might have been a bit harsh, I guess I just don't like Cudi at all
I couldn't even really get into his mixtape shit (admittedly, I've only heard Kid Named Cudi and Dat Kid from Cleveland)

drake's album>this

I don't know about that, I couldn't even make it through the Drake album
this I can at least enjoy on a certain level
but again, I don't think this style is for me (i.e. this, Drake, B.o.B. etc)

karaoke, over, find your love, thank me now are all better than anything (or nearly anything) on
this
though this has a few good songs
