Sowing, how did you write those last 2 paragraphs(which are excellent btw) and not give it a 5? It is rather remarkable the amount of ambition they had in a debut album. I suppose most all bands are ambitions when putting out their first lp, but the size and hugeness of so many of the tracks here make it seem even more enthusiastic. I wonder if they had any idea what they had with this album. As they were about to release it, do you think they knew they had something special? Not something special like (insert really good idie album here) but one of the best indie albums of all time.

Think I'm finally starting to see what's so amazing about this record. Neighborhood #1, Crown of Love, and In The Backseat are amazing.

Haiti's their best song ever. Love it.

It's a sweet indie pop tune, through I don't really enjoy the lyrics as much as the other tracks. This is one of the few albums where the lyrics are my favorite thing about it.

I love everything about this album but there's a lot of nostalgia, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it now.
Power Out is still probably my favorite.

2 tracks in and i was hoping for something a little more dreary and depressing

Well the subject matter is a bit melancholic, but the music is pretty upbeat except maybe Crown of Love and Backseat
Edit: Oh and 7 Kettles. Goddamn all the songs on here are amazing even after so many years of knowing them.

Yeah, i can agree there. I dunno, I have issues when the lyrics are quite dark and upsetting but the music is too upbeat to match.

But that's like the best...!
Do you not like The Smiths then?
|
| |
no, nor american football.
Why is it the best? For me, it's the music I primarily engage in. Something like There Will Be Fireworks is so good and powerful (well, river is at least) because the music matches the emotion presented, not just the lyrics. Same with Hospice.
imo imo imo imo

There's just something about music that makes you move, but also cry. Idk. I like the contrast.
But I mean I love when it matches too. Like Carrie & Lowell.
|
| |
I dunno, the contrast doesn't move me at all.
let's take American Football as an example. It pisses me off because it's not what the emotions presented are actually like. They're not twinkly, upbeat, floaty emotions, they're horrible, depressing and heartbreaking. I don't really understand how the contrast would make something equally, or more effective.

I'm not going to argue that one way is better than the other, but feelings aren't and shouldn't be represented one standard way. Maybe Mike wanted to express certain emotions uptempo like the distrust and regret in I'll See You When We're Both Not So Emotional to put emphasis on how rocky the relationship is.

Idk though. I'm mostly talking out of my ass on that one. I just think some darkness works well with a light touch. Something like a happy movie with a really sad background. I.e. two dying lovers spending quality time together.

To me, the contrasts serve as uplifting, reminding you that despite all this pain and suffering, there'll be some hope in the future. I'll also use an example, in this case, Gates' Bloom and Breathe. The lyrics to that album are pretty damn depressing but the beautiful music itself really makes it uplifting and and it ties pretty well to the hopeful finale of the album. Honestly, it depends on how you interpret it. There's no right or wrong.

I've always loved the contrast between heartbreaking lyrics and upbeat music. That's why I think Wake Up is done so well.
