how often is it that a band can switch vocalists and maintain quality like what happened from .neon to melting sun? pretty fun to think about. ozzy to dio was maintenance of quality, i guess

The Gathering became infinitely better when Anneke was hired. That's about the only example I can think of.

This is a very different case from those though. The new singer wasn't new to begin with since he's the boss of the band (so no adjustments necessary) and he already sang on the s/t, so it was more of a "return" anyway. Also, I think the deeper clean vocals at the end of Pulse/Surreal is him. So it's more comparable to Genesis switching to Collins, and even then Collins hadn't been the main vocalist before.
