michael jordan i have one suggestion:

the avalanches - since i left you

somehow i dont expect you to like it (since most of it is dance-y which doesnt seem up your alley), but it's probably, all in all, my favorite album of all time, and i think your opinions are so interesting--i'd love to hear one on that album.

i used to find that the enjoyability of d&g was brought down by the band's need to be 'heavy' in order to complement their 'dark' lyrics with a crushing musical backdrop which would then mask some of their more catchy melodies in a 'metal' sensibility that i thought was distracting. i still find that to be the slightest of problems (e.g. with the opener) but honestly i just think i couldn't really handle any 'heaviness' back then because i hated metal and the like. as it stands right now, i really love d&g even if it's not a classic (it's probably a 4 or 4.5 for me). it's pretty great. i can also understand a dislike of the vocals.

archers has been my jam lately; easy example of a song that opened up to me early because of its lack

of masking anything--great melody and everything else is pretty straightforward

Thank you very much for citing all those Chino quotes, saved me the trouble of looking. I can understand his stance on music being escapism. I don't think it has to be, I doubt he thinks it HAS to be, but if that's what you value in music, that's good.

Is that why you hate personal lyrics? You want music to be more of an escape?

^ @MJ In my opinion those 2 paragraphs (followed by the "history" ones) are collectively your best argument for the myriad of users going "why? why? why?"... I'll be honest some of your writing goes over my head but this ^ is very convincing and clear.

Makes sense, however bands shouldn't make albums specifically for listeners, but for themselves. Part of the reason that I've been in love with this album is because I can relate to all of the emotions, which are unleashed in purest form here. I think they're (the lyrics) are still pretty vague.

If Deftones is the heaviest band you listen to, then you should not have even bothered with Converge.

Haha. With hardcore music in particular, I've gotten used to not hearing the lyrics. It just becomes more about the vocals being another instrument.

Metal does have roots in classical music.

Well, I officially understand what you mean. I find it amusing that you condemn any other form of expression but that which you want in music. Me, there are plenty of kinds of expression I don't want in my music. But I don't condemn forms of expression. I just dislike them and move on. I don't rate an album a one because of it.

You're not condemning a sound or technique, you're condemning a form of expression and speech. You're essentially saying that one form of speech is bad and the other is good. Because in your mind one form is more complex and deep. Your mind is a mess. You've reasoned yourself into a self-important oblivion.

......And why is Mars, Bringer of War and Night on Bald Mountain heavier than anything written today?
