I might give this a try, was enjoying Chaosphere & DEI for a while but for some reason haven't had any desire to return. This band just feel like a lot of effort sometimes & the effort I put in, however fruitful, still wasn't proportionate to the enjoyment I managed to extract from their music.

Stylistically it's different than those albums as this has a lot of djent and groove, but I'd say still give it a go, man. Nothing will always be my favorite Meshuggah album, so no surprise I'm a big fan of this too.

Yeah, I don't like this. I'm a little surprised honestly, thought once I'd tackled Chaosphere all 'Shug' would be easier to enjoy & in the case of DEI it was (although to a lesser extent than Chaos) but this does nothing for me.

Makes sense; the albums do feel and sound totally different.

I thought they had a 'style' which was represented throughout their discography. I mean, it does sound like them but it's not particularly enjoyable. Chaos grooves harder, or perhaps just more 'obviously'... I don't know.

Yeah honestly you're right, I shouldn't have said groove was a defining characteristic of this; in my head I was hearing the climaxing groove around the 16-17min mark of this--which is super groovy-- when I said that. You're right about Chaos.

Some sections of this are some of the best sounding riffs across their discog.

This would easily be a 5 if it weren't for the incredibly annoying scream at the beginning.

I actually really like the scream and the incessant strumming at the beginning

I like the strumming at the beginning too, which is why the disrupting scream is irritating to me.
