mods carve the pig is not at all prog... more like.. weird... somethin. not prog.

songs for insects is okay but lends itself to wankery at times and the production is rather grating

and i've always found voivod boring

cynic not prog at all tech death tech death tech death

atheist is tech death
Mods is definitely prog. What else could it be? It's just not conventional prog. I have to conceed the Songs for Insects point.

Have you heard that particular Voivod album?

tech death is prog for people that do too much micromanaging of their musical genres.

eh it's progressive in the literal sense of progressive in that it doesn't conform to any real defined conceptions of current genres

but as far as a "prog" sound goes, no way is mods prog

so i suppose it's one of the only truly progressive albums i've heard that's not prog

lol

i've heard most of nothingface which i found to be really, really dull

Who can dispute such solid logic?

That album holds the potential to bore people... trust me on this Dimension: Hatross thing.

Shitloads of wank can be cool if it's within the confines of actual songs... this album does that better than previous ones.

i don't think there really is a "prog" sound. prog is just a term people use when music can't be
categorized neatly into any other genre.

oh screw you ulsufyring you took my point

so im really pleased with the whole bonus dvd, etc. but i was wondering, to those that got it also, did it have a "loose" lyric booklet? like theres no where on the case to secure it? which bothers me as "Deflorate" del. edition had pretty much the same design, and had the booklet go inside the left flap..but TGM has no opening..

what im asking is did anyone else notice this with their copy? or am i the only one?

what i really like about this band, is that all the cds are very good in their own right, and sometimes i like one more than another (but very slightly) and never get bored. all their cds are of equal caliber, unlike other bands, (master of puppets vs. st. anger)...

All of Metallica's albums are of equal quality if you look at it as them all being bad ...which they are.

Pretty much, although I haven't heard this which could be my defining BtBaM album. I mean probably not though as I will never listen to this.

it's not, its a lot more coherent and focused than colors and less random. if you're a fan of prog metal you'll probably like it.

there is no reason to comment on a band you don't fuckin like unless to start arguements. And to be honest, you sound like you are just trying to sound smart when in fact the truth is btbam are progressive in the fact that they are changing the song structures and elements that make up metalcore. Though they aren't metalcore (lack of chugging and breakdowns and sixth string riffs) they have, in a way, broken a genre barrier. I say this because of the different influences that show through their music. And for you to say that the guitar work is pretentious is, imo, pompous and uneducated unless you talked to them and asked them if they were trying to show off and they said yes. Think about it, if they were trying to show off it would just be a bunch of pointless solos leading to nothing. But their songs build up with dynamics and their transitions work perfectly fine for parts that, normally, would be hard for any other band to transition to. Stop talking shit about bands you don't like. If you don't like them, that's your opinion, but don't go bash them so you can try to piss off people. It's fucking childish and stupid

"I wrote a positive review, 4/5, for the album. I said there were no bad songs, and that even Swim to the Moon was good in spite of it being a mess at times. And still I have a bunch of loser kids coming in saying I'm 'not cut out for progressive' (which means what, exactly?) or that I just don't 'understand' their 'jazz' influence (there is no jazz whatsoever on this album)."

Please let me clarify, you wrote a fine review, I agreed with most of it. Im merely stating that the length and content of Swim to the Moon (and indeed all songs on the record) makes sense when you remember that Between the Buried and Me is influenced by jazz (among many many others). By "influence" I did not claim that there was in fact any real jazz on the album, but that their time changes, playing style, and song structure often hail back to an influence somewhere in jazz.

I meant no disrespect, just an opportunity for discussion.

Finally decided to rate this. Obfuscation is the only song on here that is fantastic the whole way through with the beginning of Disease... and end of Fossil Genera being equally as fantastic. But i must say swim to the moon starts off as one of the best tracks and ends as one of the worst in Btbam's career. It feels cheap and effortless and i cant help but visualize them going "look what i can do" throughout.

I absolutely love desert of song however.

EDIT: Actually swim to the moon kinda sucks the whole way through. Would have preferred a White Walls remix over that crap
