I'm slowly checking out some stuff though. I'm enjoying the one Dream Theatre album I own, and I wish i could find that machine men debut album somewhere, from what I heard it's ace!

Metallica's main revolution was the fact they brought metal to a much wider audience than any before them, and probably thereafter. Then they turned Hard Rock.
Alligator try Mastodon if you haven't already. Perhaps not for everyone but I find them one of the better modern mainstream metal bands.
