"the point is this: you're claiming that there's absolutely no objective standard by which to say that a Radiohead song from Kid A or OK Computer is better than 2 open notes plucked in the same repetitious pattern for 5 minutes on my acoustic guitar. that's what you have to defend."
yes
you can say that
idk what iluvatar is talking about thats completely fine
if you like it better, than it's better to you
theres no objective standard, it's from person to person
so dumb ugh

This has just turned into an argument that is completely pointless. You like what you like, because you like what you hear and that happens due to the way a musician composes their music, which is done in a way you enjoy. Subjective or not, you like it, fair enough that's your opinion.

youre whole post basically says that music is subjective so idk why 'subjective or not' is there
whatever

if you cant see why your example is too extreme to be taken seriously, then you dont deserve a real response tbh.
if you can't explain why my example is too extreme, then you don't deserve to be responding. i asked a simple question, you give a simple answer.
robertsona: ok well it's just a complete difference of opinion then. i just think if what you say is true, and there's no standard whatsoever, that the site is pretty much worthless. what does everyone do on this site all day long? they argue incessantly about what to rate a certain album, argue endlessly about which are the best and worst bands in a given genre, and bicker (especially on list threads) constantly about which albums are better than others, and which song is a given band's best song. but if what you say is true, and it's all subjective, then all of that is completely pointless.

Basically because I'm sick of this thread.

ok then...
Taylor Swift is mediocre pop music at best, cliche and downright bad pop music at worst. the album deserves no more than a 2.5.
is that what you were looking for? haha

i disagree stan. i think this album shows charming honesty, offers interesting slice-of-life lyrics typical of many teenagers today, features one of pop music's most ingratiating personalities in swift, and rounds everything off with some finely produced hooks and songs. i rate it no less than a 4.

all of that is true. the problem i have with the record is: every single one of those things could be said about a myriad of albums and artists in the pop genre, going back all the way to the 1960's. her formula is not anywhere close to unique, and it doesn't even try to be. does music have to be unique to be good? not at all. however, if it isn't going to be unique or distinctive in any way, it has to be outstanding in at least a few of the elements that are used in the music.
the problem with Taylor is, she brings nothing new or unique to the table, and not one element of her music is outstanding or exceptionally skillful.
there are plenty of pop bands/artists with better hooks then Taylor, plenty of pop bands/artists that are just as honest and even more so than Taylor, plenty of pop bands/artists that can relate to teenagers' lives in their lyrics, plenty of pop bands/artists with more compelling personalities, plenty of pop bands/artists with more musical skill then Taylor could ever hope to have, and plenty of pop bands/artists that combine several if not all of these elements together AND add a musical feature unique to themselves that endears them to fans and sets them apart from their peers.
there is simply nothing remarkable about her at all. it would have to be a purely emotional connection for anyone with a knowledge of the history of pop music to be able to say that this album is anything more than simply average.
basically, i need to write a review haha. actually that's probably a good idea, i'll get on it.

i can't think of that many top 40 artists at the moment who are better at the things you listened

there is simply nothing remarkable about her at all.
except that she's brilliant at understated music. the flaw in your argument is that this is meant to be simple. it's meant to be easy. if she were a more 'skilled' lyricist in technical terms, then it wouldn't reach her audience as well and it wouldn't be as effective in any case. if she put solos in there it would ruin the listening experience. if she messed with structure it would make it difficult to sing along to. you do not understand why this album is an impressively executed piece of pop music. like i say - objectively, i cant say for a second that this is a 4.5, but the people who have given this a 1 look like me rating a black metal discography.

"it’s usually because Swift isn’t focusing on her strengths: namely, boys, breakups, or all three."
maybe its too late for an edit to get noticed but, you say all three, but only give 2 items(Boys and breakups) so remove the "or all three"...
sorry couldnt help myself

I respect her for what she is able to, but this is probably something I would not listen to on a regular basis.
I thought it was pretty cool how almost all of her songs got into the Hot 100 with the release of Fearless and the recent deluxe edition bonus tracks that were released this year. I haven't heard the bonus tracks, but does anyone think they are good?
