Also tbf Cotton and Demon i get where you're coming from, chaos in me was pretty unlistenable to me when I first tried it. Don't know what happened but their sound just opened up and clicked after a while, idk why. Gotta be in a simultaneously furious/sad boi mindset maybe, not furious enough for the likes of Nails type hardcore and not sad boi enough for something slightly more nuanced a la "Vi Som Alaskade".

"I feel like if they only screamed sometimes it would have some sort of impact but having nothing but screaming the whole time is like the angry musical equivalent of just eating straight salt"
lol this reminds me of when Sowing dropped into the Ulcerate thread and said he wished the vocals could be cleans
"Gotta be in a simultaneously furious/sad boi mindset maybe"
Yeah for real - best of both worlds, but you've gotta be juggling them to begin with. maybe

Cheers porc, Mesa Verde are pretty good. I’ll see about those other recs.
@Johnny: hmm although I get the ref and it is in some way true, personally I can see where he’s coming from. Then again context is important, so I’d hazard a guess that it holds more weight coming from someone who has 20%+ DM in their pie chart (i.e. me)... and yeah honestly for the style I’d rather the screams were broken up, not with cleans but with quieter more considered moments, or simply ‘space’. If it’s incessantly fast paced and filled to the brim with screams then yes it a) gets tiresome quick and b) loses any impact it may have initially conjured. It’s a balancing act.

also, the aggression seems pretty well-paced considering the length of these albums overall. cmon, like 15 minutes? and their longest album (24 min lol) is spaced out with plenty of softer, melodic moments

Yeah, it's all extremely digestible. But anyways, I think this music is supposed to be very brutal, it's just consequently not metal and pretty melodic at times. Dunno why dm is just fine with all screams and general brutality in an album for 40 mins but this isn't somehow. It's still a subgenre of hardcore, which is heavy music. But if you guys want a more skramz with ebbs and flows, try Funeral Diner and Envy. Early Pianos Become the Teeth even. Perhaps Birds in Row's first album. Cryonics by Hot Cross. Off Minor. Yaphet Kotto.
Edit: Plus, people usually call stuff like Orchid, Jerome's Dream, Usurpe Synapse, Pg. 99, Swing Kids, etc. emoVIOLENCE like same as when regular hardcore is cranked to 11 with blast beats, it's powerviolence. Like it's totally meant to be aggressive as fuck music.

There’s a difference between not liking something and being unable to process it Million, your comment has some decent and possibly useful info (as far as I can tell) but it made me roll my eyes pretty hard due to your defensive and rather condescending tone.

@Demon: Well, I mean, keep rolling them. No one's stopping you. It's Sput. Land of opinionated assholes. Idk why we're tone policing now. I only say what I say because it seems most fans of this music don't have the same qualms you and Colt have, and I'm speaking in defense of the music being exactly what it is.
@Colt: Screams don't hit my ear the same way that singing does at all, and I don't think they're meant to. I don't think of screams as notes. More textures. I feel like it's better to look at them more like a percussive element and not look for a catchy melody in them. Something raw and primal to a good scream/growl imo. I do hope you find some heavy shit that works for you one day, though.

In terms of accessible heavy shit, can't really go wrong with Mutoid Man. Mathy metalcore fun with old school heavy metal and all sorts of other things packed into it.

True! That's a pretty solid band. Also, Colt, have you ever just listened to Sleep? Lots of people love Sleep that don't really enjoy heavy music at large.
