Yeah, considering how good a guitarist Dime was, his tone was always super ugly, but maybe that was the point.

Also he has this innate habit of playing such ugly riffs right after great tunes and riffs, Sleep being a prime example. Most verses on this have average riffs

Well the riffs are one thing, but his tone on the leads is also horrible. The only *good* guitarist I can think of with worse tone is Mark Tremonti.

Tremonti's tones are pretty dirty yeah, and his composition style is incredibly generic, bores the hell out of me

Dime always seemed to have a sense of pride that he was able to get such gnarled tones out of solid state amplifiers, but I never was a huge fan of his tone either. It's always sounded too compressed, although the sustain is undeniable.
For my money, he best tone is to he heard on GSTK.
