I wasn't around for the hype I guess. every time I listen this feels like a pretty damn solid 4.5 to me

Album Rating: 3.5
the hype for this album on the internet in the early 00s was unlike pretty much anything else
people who hadn't even heard most classic death metal albums all got on the bandwagon for this
as reflected by my rating i think it's great but not the masterpiece some make it out to be

this was the highest aggregate rating on MA not long ago (i think it's Symbolic now)
it's an excellent album but sounds so remarkably terrible that i can't honor it with more than a 4

Have you tried the remaster shadow?
|

I hate the dance beats in the remaster
|
| |
^^ there's a moment in the remaster where they suddenly drop some kind of Amsterdam happy hardcore beat

Yea its on on the way home. So retarded. Ever heard the taake song that has the random boing noise?

The remaster there's actually a bit of bass guitar and stupid d'n'b sections

"Ever heard the taake song that has the random boing noise?"
Can't really remember hearing a Taake song with dance beats.
I'm not much of a fan of dance beats in metal in general. In the Elvenefris remaster most don't completely screw up the overall experience for me, but that one instance of hardcore gabber house cringe was disappointingly moronic.

Oh yeah, just checked it out. It's a bit "eh?" but not as obnoxious as the gabber stuff in On the Way Home

This album really blew me away when I was younger. Since then, many of its flaws have revealed themselves to me i.e. the production, occasionally semi-cheeseball riffs, one dimensional vocals. Well, that, or I'm just getting pickier as I encroach on my mid-20s

^ true, the only this that disheartens me really about bands like this is hearing a clear display of brilliant potential, and then seeing the band never have the opportunity to really perfect a great idea.
that said, this album will slay for eternity
