el cielo is brilliant.
sigur ros is waayyy more overrated than el cielo in my opinion.
yeah benz i get what youre saying about not comparing them but you can still prefer one over the other.
its like people who said mono's newest release is better than DMST's. you can't compare them, but you can prefer one over the other

Why are you guys even comparing the two records?

At least DMST and Mono are in the same fucking genre. El Cielo and ( ) are worlds apart.

thing is prophet, I think it's really stupid that Mono and DMST are in the same genre, because they sound nothing alike. It's what shits me about post-rock. you have bands like Godspeed and Tortoise and Sigur Ros and Maybeshewill lumped into one genre. that's like saying Burzum and Deftones are both the same genre.
El Cielo and ( ) actually are pretty similar when you think about it, at least to me. Especially considering ( ) can be interpreted in an infinite amount of ways.

I guess. I mean all those bands you mentioned are similar in a way (except Maybeshewill, I never understood why they are considered post-rock). To me, post-rock is a band that uses classical ideals in a rock setting (electric instruments, rock drums, etc). Every post-rock band strives to create emotional music using only their instruments, trying to get a certain reaction out of the listener, just like a classical composer. The difference is they use typical rock instruments instead of an orchestra.
Anyway, genres are just used to make it easier to group bands and talk about music, they never do the bands any justice.
It would be cool to write something about the similarities between El Cielo and ( ), I've never really thought of it that way, but since you mentioned it I can see where you're coming from.

Yeah that's what I feel about post-rock too, but DMST doesn't fit that really. they're much more jazzy and different than mono and gospeed. I
I actually wrote a paper once comparing a Russian Circles song to Balinese Gamelan music hahaha. You can compare so much different music if you think about it. It's really interesting.

Agaetis Byrjun is the only whole album worth while from these guys. Having said that, Untitled 3 and 8 are beasts.
