I've actually joked about this before, but I challenged a few friends to listen to Staind's album Break the Cycle but imagine Jonas' vocals in the place of Aaron's. There's not much of a stylistic difference between that era of Staind and alternative-era Katatonia, minus the fact that LFDGD and GCD have way better lyrics and atmosphere than the Staind album

the lyrics here are worse than on most nu-metal records because they are done pretty straightforwardly and don't fit the music at all

That's why I singled out GCD and LFDGD instead of this album ;D

to be fair the music saves this. I always end up thinking "oh right, it does jam". Proggy/jangly nu-goth (???) isn't that bad

Yeah, I gotcha Flug. I used to love this album's lyrics as a teenager, but they definitely haven't aged well over time. And when you compare them to newer albums like Fall of Hearts and City Burials, they're pretty embarrassing lol
Honestly, my 4 is mostly out of nostalgic feelings toward the album these days. It was one of the records that really got me into Katatonia in the first place, so it'll always have a special place for me

very understandable. I've got into katatonia way later with DEK and initially also really enjoyed this... until I started really listening to the lyrics. This might honestly be the worst case of lyrics lowering my enjoyment of an album ever.

idk if I've ever been more disappointed by a band I was trying to get into than when I heard this as my first Katatonia aged 15ish

THe more I listen to this album, the more I think it’s disgustingly underrated

Would you say that is an objective opinion?
Now checking the anniversary edition, and I think it does sound better. 3 seems underrated indeed, but that's just my opinion.

> I always liked the fact that they seemed more gritty and raw than your average goth/doom lyrics, and didn't touch on the same tired tropes.
