That's true, but when they choose between rockin' out and abstract, I'm all for wack'n'woll and care less about abstract

@Johnny: Perhaps, but isn’t it a balancing act? - one which may have been achieved to a greater extent here. Weirdly I’m listening to Rain King right now.

I mean this album is borderline perfect (already said it's probs their objective best lol), so I won't argue like that - all I can add is that the opening run of EVOL is still their best 4-song run and that there's nothing quite like the chills that kick in if you get to around Secret Girl/Marilyn Moore in low lighting, only for Expressway to wash the whole atmosphere away into nothingness.
Honestly, this and EVOL might be my fave adjacent pairing of records in any band's discog idk

Wow, high praise. I was just putting it out there, haven’t decided how I actually feel about EVOL yet - would be unwise to evaluate it so quickly after all.
In related news my current self is perplexed by the idea that Daydream Nation could be perceived as obnoxious - something my former (much younger) self believed. It is admittedly quite satisfying when you find evidence that your taste developed (won’t say ‘matured’) in some way.

This has made assess what the best 1-2 combos out there are, and yeah SY are a top 3 pick for cert
Wanna agree with this and post something about the value of maturity, but I'm jamming the Blood Brothers and feeling plenty obnoxious rn

Stereo Sanctity is probably the quintessential Sonic Youth tune.

I was going to say you have some weird ratings, but Schiz, Catholic, Pacific Coast are all high so that’s cool. Hot Wire My Heart is also not great, so agreed there. Master Dik is way off.

Catholic Block is just the hardest jam, probably my favorite here even over Schizophrenia. not sure if that's a hot take

Master-Dik is a bonus track please amend the average or I will sulk

Sister's great, but Evol and Daydream are the peak SY, and this is a tiny little valley between (that's still way the fuck above sea level)
