still can't believe they played all but three songs off this when I saw them in 2023 and Cosmic was one of the three like that's the best song on the album what are you thinking

They didn’t realize how much everyone loved that song until it was too late. I really believe it’s going to stay on their setlist going forward, it’s a perfect closer

Also I think before hitting the road they were probably thinking that they could play all of the GOD tracks or just play Cosmic and they didn’t realize that almost everyone would rather see Cosmic lol
And I know for a fact that Syn just forgot how to play the solo between recording it and touring, they said he had to relearn it before the third leg of that tour.

I find it super interesting that they missed that cosmic was going to be a hit.

It’s extremely interesting. I’m gonna have to listen to their trax podcast, I’m pretty sure they have like an hour and a half talking specifically about Cosmic.
And I mean like, I’ve been a fan for over fifteen years, I’ve always loved this band as long as I’ve been into music, it was always going to be difficult for them to make something that beats out that nostalgia I have for them. So it’s so fucking crazy to me that they cooked up a song that good this late in their career and really didn’t realize how much the fans would love it.
Just casually dropping their best song 25 years into being a band.

I’m listening to the Cosmic episode of their trax podcast and there’s some pretty cool stuff so far. I’ll post some of the interesting bits for anyone that doesn’t feel like listening to an hour and a half of it.

A little over halfway through the Cosmic episode and these have been my biggest takeaways:
-The vocal melody and opening chord progression has been something the band has had in their back pocket for a long time, like 15-20 years before recording. They actually made is sound like Syn was responsible for that vocal melody, he would jokingly sing it while the band was warming up or hanging out
-It was originally going to open the record but in a much different form.
-“It’s not easy for us, we’re not a band full of Paul McCartney’s. We had one, and he fuckin ditched us…” - awh, Syn saying that hits deep. It’s nice that they can joke about it now but damn, the Rev’s presence is still felt 15 years later.
-Brooks used three separate drum sets. The outro came together in “the final hour” and almost didn’t make the album. They implied that it took the longest to write and record out of every song on LIBAD, which tbh is not surprising to me at all.
-The lyrics paint a pretty obvious picture of the song’s basic concept but Matt’s biggest moment of inspiration was a night out with his wife on mushrooms, and he has this realization that no matter what plane of existence he’s in he will find her. I don’t personally believe in an afterlife but that thought is beautiful to me. I think that’s a great outlook on not just our earthly lives but human existence as a whole. Basically I’m probably gonna start doing mushrooms again lol
Still have about 40 mins left but very interesting stuff so far… the host is kind of annoying tho, he spells it all out… like I just heard what the band said I don’t need your cliff notes man lol

^ thanks for the spark notes wildcard. Will consider listening, but it sounds a bit overblown if each song has 1+ hours... I tried to listen to a music breakdown of a radiohead album once and while it was super interesting, it was just far too slow.

I’ll update it man! I really think I’m getting the best parts of it but obv listen to it if you feel like it!
And if I’m remembering right Cosmic is by far the longest of these “trax” things, most of them are less than an hour… but I think going for an hour and a half about this song made them go “oh shit people really love this song we better yap about it.”
Also one last thing before I go to bed, Syn’s dad cried when he first heard it. Idk I’m not really a fan of the guy for… reasons. But I think that perfectly describes how attached people are to this song

3.0 is unjust, I'm 5'ing this.
I remember liking Cosmic even when I wasn't crazy about the album itself. Reminds me alot of Higher (for some reason), which I think is one of their best songs ever.
