yeah this is definitely their most-bm influenced album, apart from the early demos and faustian echoes

Man this album had some good ideas, but was a bit too messy and underproduced.

sounds fine to me. The whole "recorded on analog" gimmick works.

Agreed, and an interesting and intentional transition from their most polished record.

Yes, it's rough and chaotic and kinda erratic. Some people don't seem to like that, but I just think all these attributes support what this album is going for, which obviously is a totally different thing than what Ashes was going for. It was pretty much the same with Ashes relating to The Mantle, too, getting rid of a lot of the folky stuff etc.

This is the only Agalloch full length other than Pale Folklore that can comfortably fit into black metal.

I wouldnt even bother comparisons between Ashes and Mantle...Fwiw this is better than Folklore.

pale folklore has a lot of great ideas throughout but they are sometimes executed in a rather amateurish way imo, plus i'm not a fan of hallways of enchanted ebony at all. don't get me wrong, it's a great album with a couple of killer tracks but they reached a whole new level of profoundness on the mantle

I can't argue with that at all. Pale Folklore is just one of my top 3 albums of all time haha.
