i think tsop is pretty accessible because it has lots of catchy individual parts and it opens with its two best organized tracks before instantly falling apart with spirit crusher onwards
i think a lot of very complicated and disjointed music isn't necessarily inaccessible, like i reckon loads of people can easily consume BTBAM - Colors which is a pretty infamously disjointed listening experience in comparison to a lot of other progressive/technical metal which may be more conventionally written

fair enough, i guess there are some pretty straightfoward songs on here, like "a story to tell".

Had to jam this today since y’all be bumpin’ this lately.
So
freakin’
GOOD!
And by the way, Andy L’s leads on this album are outstanding! His solo on “Trapped In A Corner” is epic.

for what it's worth, the sound of perseverance was the first death metal album I ever liked at all

I listened to this and Ghost Reveries back-to-back today, and then I did it three more times. It kicked my ass.
Chuck...*sigh*
DO YOU FEEL WHAT I FEEL?

the reason TSOP is so controversial is the fact that it’s really a control denied album with the death logo. the label has chuck under contract for another death record but he was kind of over death metal at that point, so he just reworked a lot of control denied tunes into death tunes and TSOP is what we got.
so if you approach it as basically a prog record that the label forced to be a death record it makes much more sense.

Finally bumped to a 5. This is probably my favorite Death album these days… to me it’s like the perfect culmination of everything Chuck accomplished in his career, and the songwriting is absolutely incredible, especially in regards to how smoothly the riffs transition to each other
