Pretty sure this and Deicide played a major part in early black metal but that's a VERY controversial statement.

Early Morbid Angel plays a part in black metal's history, but not really this album, and not really Deicide either.

I also wouldn't call Morbid Angel's part particularly major

Quick guys, change the wiki page:

"The overtly Satanic and occult lyrical themes were a significant influence on the early Norwegian black metal scene."

I don't think an AllMusic review saying that Emperor and Cradle of Filth took inspiration from the occult motifs of this album is a very strong argument for how this album was a major influence on black metal.

Morbid Angel's early style and aesthetic were defs a part of the first wave of black metal, but by the time this album came out, black metal was already largely defined and active. And when it came to second wave bm, I don't want to seem like a dick but Cradle of Filth weren't really pioneers.

So correct.

But again, that was before this album. I'm referring to the demos and Abominations of Desolation. But considering the initial Abominations tape was limited, its influence wasn't exactly that wide. And by the time it was "officially" released, it was sadly too late.

For black metal, yes. For death metal: right on time.

Well well well

"The hellish overlays are just icing on the cake, and if you ask me, Altars Of Madness boosted what Possessed, and Venom had already started. It was all part of the big push for the Norwegian black metal gimmicks, despite not being black metal itself. The overly satanic imagery would give the corpse-painters a bar to top, which Deicide managed to do a year later as well. "
