Well, you know, this is actually an extremely lyrically-driven album, and I think it's strange that more people don't realize this. The reason the songs are so long, and the reason that there seems to be so many "filler riffs" is because there had to be enough riffs to go with the story told by the lyrics, which were most likely written before the music. The part at 9:47 of Sun of Nothing is absolutely pivotal for the lyrics. It's the part where the man traveling to the sun in search of enlightenment realizes that he never needed to, where he realizes that "he never had it all that bad." When you listen to how all the riffs correspond with the lyrics, all the "filler riffs" will be suddenly gone, I promise you.

im sure they couldve altered the lyrics so they tell the whole story without having the pointless riffs

Yeah, maybe, but I've been connected to the lyrics on this ever since I first started listening to it, so the album doesn't really have any "pointless riffs" to me.

the thing that bothers me about 9:47 is that is put in between two amazing sections. there are plenty of other riffs like that scattered throughout the album, it just fucks with the flow
