I wouldn't go that far, chuck's vocals have always been a class below the greatest of the greats in the genre at the very least. not that he's bad or not enjoyable as a vocalist, but I wouldn't go close to saying he's what defines the band

Well I mean it's also his guitar playing/songwriting but disagree hard about his vocals. I fucking adore his vocal performance on every Death record.
Get that 3.5 outta here, you heathen!

It's not unreasonable to say Chuck's vocals were a step below the best the genre has ever had. You could argue he was one of, if not the most broadly talented person in death metal, but he wasn't the best in any one particular category, just unusually good at everything he did.

think that might be idealization talking but whatever, never said he was a bad vocalist, just a lot less powerful than a lot of those who came after him

He was.

As a vocalist, I'd put him comfortably behind guys like Drunen, Pillard, Boman and Reifert.

Pillard and Reifert maybe. I love Drunnen but I’m taking Chuck over him.

"I don't remember if it was you, dude - probably not because I was just referring to a shit ton of people in general and no one person specifically. BUT I'LL GLADLY FIGHT ABOUT IT"
Let's go. Lol you're good tho. I figured it was general, just wasn't sure cuz my last post mentioned vox and wasn't sure if you misread or somethin
"I wouldn't go close to saying he's what defines the band"
Dude, regardless of how you feel about his vocals, he was the principle songwriter, he wrote the lyrics, as well as playing lead guitar and vox. Chuck IS Death. So how does he not define the band? Also gotta disagree about the vox -- maybe he's not the best ever, but he's still an excellent vocalist.

I mean I get how that sounds like idealization but tbh he's one of my all time favorite musicians so I dunno. Just how I feel, bros. Once you get to your favorite artists, talking about them sounds like hyperbole.

There isn't any individual musician who is no longer with us who had more potential than him to put out more groundbreaking work. Imagine if Chuck was still around and he did continue writing death metal over the past 20 years?

Chuck should have used these screams in a 90s pop boy band, that would have been dope
