Doof I'd rank Mr. November in my top 10-20 National songs, sure it's not one of their quintessential songs sound wise but in quality it's up there with the best.

Mr. November isn't too good outside of the context of the album

It's a big number in the live set, along with 'Vanderlyle'. Be interesting if they ever drop them from the set eventually if some new songs take their roles (hands in the air rocker/sing along acoustic number)

Full imma disagree if i want a random national song to listen to on it's own i always pick mr november or available

I mean it's def good on its own but I think it's 10x more powerful as the closer of this. If I pick something off this to listen singularly, it's usually Karen or Soho Riots.

Karen and Geese are my two most played from this one. Geese is the only song I consider an absolute classic here

All the Wine has always been my fave, with Geese close behind.

Honestly Karen is one of the weaker ones for me too :-/
I mean, every song is good to great though.

With Karen I love the 'if I want water...' section, esp how the song transitions into it quicker the second time, plus I dig it's awkwardness as a composition

That's my favorite part too

He delivers the lines so smoothly

I think other songs pull off the awkwardness a bit better
I would say the songs holding this back from a 5 for me are Karen, Baby We'll Be Fine, Friend of Mine, and City Middle. Every other song I adore.

I think that explains how I feel about the songs on this - there's usually a section I really enjoy that's paired with another section I don't really rate anywhere near as highly. Most extreme example? Astronauts.
I don't feel like that about most of their later material.

They certainly hit another level of consistency after this.
Imo song for song High Violet and TWFM are the most consistent (and two of the most consistent albums ever made) though personally I find Boxer a bit better than TWFM when taken as a whole.

The lyrics are always really good, but something about Val Jester, Friend of Mine, and Baby We'll Be Fine sound wise is just off for me

They should go back to making darker more post-punky albums again because as much as i love all their stuff this is just amazing.

Yeah since this album they've gotten less and less post punk but that's definitely something I'd like to see them reintroduce into their sound even if I prefer their most recent stuff.
I'm fascinated to see what this "math-y, electronic-y" stuff is going to sound like though.

Ash gets it, Friend of Mine hits so hard

Yeah could be interesting, maybe they take influence from.minus the bear or something that would sound neat i think

Full, it's a pretty good song but one I find less remarkable in the context of their whole discog.
