I think it could’ve been trimmed a little bit (like literally almost every fucking Metallica album) and has ass production but I don’t really see the “oh they’re just trying to get old fans back” criticism, like idk fuck it maybe, but the songwriting here is the best it’s been since at least the black album, personally I’d say since Justice.

Broken Beat and Scarred sucks, don’t really care for Unforgiven 3 either, and there’s absolutely no reason for Judas Kiss to be 8 fucking minutes. Also I think James reaches a little further than he’s capable of but they’re fucking trying. These last two are straight up them on autopilot aside from a couple of choice cuts
Suicide and Redemption + My Apocalypse is a killer finish too. Beyond Magnetic is pretty tight too, Hate Train and Hell and Back are better than most anything here. I’d swap some tracks in and out for those.

I've made an 'all Metallica albums since and including the Black Album reduced to the classic 8 song format' playlist and so far I've tried Load and Reload, but they're much improved already.
For 'Death Magnetic' I trimmed the two songs you named, might give that a go today. 'Hardwired' I never massively got into so that might be the biggest beneficiary for the snip.

I’m bumping to a 3.5 again, the last couple of minutes of ‘Day That Never’ into all of ‘Nightmare Long’ is the best 10 minutes they’ve released since the Black Album.
Definitely improved cutting it to 8 songs and esp having a Side A of Life/Line/Day/Nightmare is impressive.
Side B of Cyanide/Unforgiven/Suicide/Apocalypse goes down a bit easier without Judas too.
