i've decided to give this another chance and it's a very frustrating album because there are songs on here i genuinely like (vore, the apparition) but the pretentious getup they do for the artificial mysterious nonsense is so distracting.
if they were just a regular band who said they were doing a hard rock/r&b mix i think people would be a lot more charitable towards it but listening to songs about people leaving you voicemails and not calling you back is just so at odds with the whole 'vessel to an otherworldly deity' bullshit. that and so many of the vocal passages get so aggravating for as long as the album is when you consider how trivial the narratives are.
i hope they drop the pretentious getup and make a more streamlined, focussed record next time but i doubt they will considering how well it's selling, lol.

Having recently revisited this album myself I have to agree with everything DarkNoctus said. The pretentious "anonymous" cult shit is so jarring when compared to the shallow nature of the lyrics, and on top of that the genre combinations are so transparently surface level. The metal sections are just downtuned buttcore that Architects and Spiritbox are churning out nowadays and the R&B stuff is similarly trend-chasing. Again though, at least Architects and Spiritbox are authentically generic, rather than using anonymity to appear more interesting.
Also a lot of this band's fanbase are utterly insufferable.

I’ve said it before, but these guys are The 1975 of metal
just with extra anonymity-related bollocks, therefore increasing the cringe levels even further, against all odds

Half this album is actually kinda good. The other half is really really gay. 2.5/5.

its way too long and theres cringe moments, but i prefer this way more than a lot of really bland octanecore done by trendhopping altmetal bands (Architects, Asking Alexandria, Wage War, TWA, post-Atlas PWD, I Prevail, etc)

I don't love the vocals, but I guess they don't bother me as much. This has way more variety than something like Monomania, For those Who Wish to Exist, or any of the last like 4 Asking Alexandria or Amity Affliction albums have. Whether or not you dig whats here is a whole other thing though.
i dig the extremely faux-prog/fisher price tesseract mixed with imagine dragons material enough for my 3 ¯_(ツ)_/¯ would rather have this clusterfuck than 40 mins of ABABCB alt-metal songs
